How fit all your research into a short talk...

Don't.

I’m currently chairing a search. Part of this is soliciting names of strong candidates from colleagues. I get many, but some of them I cannot contact—no webpage, not even an email on the “People” page of their postdoc advisor. I BEG of you: if you’re on the job market, BE FINDABLE!

Will wait for the Linux port 😉

In order to be able to say anything interesting about them you need to remove this trivial option, and thus accept the simple loop as a knot.

ps
I have been informed that Mathematicians came up with the notion of "knotoids" to describe "knots" with dangling ends 🪢

This looks weird the first time you see it, but there is a very good reason to go with such a definition: you want to study what you can and can't do by manipulating the knot, and if you have the two extremes dangling, you can always untie any knot, making them all equivalent to a piece of string

An example of this I always found funny is in knot theory, where a simple loop is considered to be a knot, while anything where the two extremes are dangling are not, including the common overhand knot.

Sometimes you need to forego the intuitive way to define stuff for the sake of actually being able to do anything useful with those definitions.

#knots 🧪 🎢

Two white curves on a black background. The first is a circular loop, labelled as "A knot". The second is a overhand knot, labelled as "Not a knot".

Not sure whether this is a hilarious or a terrifying idea. Probably a bit of both 😉

In honor of spooky month, share a 4 word horror story that only someone in your profession would understand

I'll go first: Six page commercial lease.

A strong quality for a good researcher is the ability to sometimes ignore small details, and sometimes delves into them with the greatest care, and more importantly to being able to switch wisely between the two modes.

If I were to ask to my 7y/o son he would look at me with an extremely puzzled face and no understanding of what a My Little Pony is 🤣

The 2 that have died on me in the past 10 years beg to differ 😉

That is the same laptop I have!
Which means I will NOT run any BIOS update until I hear everything is fine with your 🤣

The only real difference between instances is who the moderators are, and thus how it will be moderated.
In practice just choose one, and if you find out you don't like how it is moderated you can always move to another one with a couple of clicks.

Ahead of tomorrow’s #NobelPrize announcement, I went on a deep dive in search of the most obscure physics Nobel Prizes in history. That means it's time for a thread on...🧵

PHYSICS NOBEL PRIZES YOU’VE NEVER HEARD OF – PART 1

To be fair, he doesn't need to ever produce a game. He just need to convince enough investors to pour billions into it, until he can convince them of the next big thing.
This stuff never had any connection with reality.

This is how I want to be awarded the Nobel Prize.

It looks like I have to add Wiley to the list of publishers I refuse to publish with or review for 🤷🏻‍♂️

Everybody makes money out of academic authors except the authors...News.

Wiley is the latest academic publisher to reach a multi-million deal to allow access to its content to AI developers, with no opt out, let alone payment, for the authors who created that content.
Wiley set to earn $44m from AI rights deals, confirms “no opt-out" for authors
The US publisher is the latest to capitalise on deals to give tech firms access to its authors’ content to train their Large Language Models (LLMs).

I have used the Riley when I was teaching mathematical methods. It is a good book with clear explanations, and covers a lot of topics. I would recommend.

Offering again to put you in contact with my Head of Department to discuss the possibility to move here 😉

(Technically Heads of Department here can't make those choices, but they can make a case with the Faculty.)
