October Horror, Day 1: Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein (1948, Charles Barton). Finally getting around to this one (which might be a big theme in this year's picks). It's definitely a mixed bag, with Costello at the top, Lon Chaney Jr following, and everyone and everything else in some order below them. Abbott just kind of disappears into the rest of the non-monster cast for the most part, as there's not much for him to do and Costello has so many others to play off of.
Lugosi suffers from a similar issue as Abbott, just on the monster side.
It seemed like this, more than any of the other monster team-ups and mash-ups, was the basis for The Monster Squad.
Some charming effects and enough laughs to make this solid seasonal viewing.

Remember when stuff like this would actually be bad for the careers of the people exposed. I miss those times.

Can’t wait to see what The Free Press and CBS have to say about this!

Before we became fully consumed by the constant consumption and regurgitation of nostalgia “content”, this felt like a welcome and fun nod
The Mist, 2007. We see the main character, from behind, working on a painting (Roland, from the Dark Tower series). It and several others (including the illustration from the movie poster for The Thing) are all actually Drew Struzan works.

Remember that 30 Rock episode where Jenna tries to out-parody Weird Al, so he just makes a serious song?
Thinking about what the Rule 34 freaks would make of this.

They shot a reverend in the head with pepper balls for calling on them to redeem themselves. "I have not seen them cross the line yet" means the line doesn't fucking exist.

AFTER MIDNIGHT

A tilted clock face with flames around its edges, the head and arm of an alarmed woman sticking out of the lower end of the clock face October Horror, Day 12: Dead of Night (1945, dir. Alberto Cavalcanti, Charles Crichton, Basil Dearden, and Robert Hamer), Dead of Night (1977, dir. Dan Curtis), and After Midnight (1989, dir. Ken Wheat and Jim Wheat). Three horror anthologies, two with the same name. And yet the '45 Dead of Night and After Midnight are much closer to one another, having a very similar wraparound conceit, while the '77 Dead of Night is a TV Movie with no wraparound. As is the general rule with horror anthologies, these are all mixed bags in terms of quality. For the '45 Dead, the ventriloquist dummy one is maybe the most famous, but I really liked the wraparound story the best. For the '77 one l'd assume the final story, one of many variations on The Monkey's Paw, is the most well-regarded given the cover art. But the opener about a time-traveling car has an interesting twist. And, finally, I would say After Midnight peaks with the opening part of its wraparound (which I don't want to give away), but the second story about a couple who wind up at a haunted house has an entertainingly nasty ending.
