The string that binds them wasn’t red, at first.

It was flimsy, transparent, barely there. Kohaku couldn’t even see it, at first, and he doubts that Madara could too.

Then again, they both might’ve ignored it. It’s easier to think that theirs is a relationship of necessity and just-because. A coincidental meeting, convenient and nothing more.

It is blood that dyes that string.

Deep red. Bright red. Brilliant as it can be.

It is blood that they shed by their own hands. Or blood, theirs on the worst of nights.

Present sin and past bloodline, coming together to create the color of that string and to make it thicker than anything they could hope for.

Unbreakable now.

The color of destiny unmistakeable, now.

Happy spring wedding anniversary to these two

He used to hate cherry blossoms.

Those large, overbearing trees seemed to be everywhere as he sat in his room, alone, curled up and scrolling through a timeline full of lives that he cannot live. Clicking, expanding, watching the blue colors of the sky and the pink colors of the flower that is meant to be a part of the name he is the hope of.

Those flowers on his screen were made of pixels, after all. They are his name, yet he spent all those springs not knowing the true value of that name while people whose worlds were bigger than his spoke of its beauty.

Today, though, it’s different.

Today, he wears white as he gazes upon a single cherry blossom tree. Here, it isn’t made of pixels. Here, it stands.

Ah — maybe, it’s true that cherry blossoms are beautiful.

And as he stands next to the man who showed him that his world now is one that stretches on to infinite boundaries, he smiles, just a little.

He doesn’t hate cherry blossoms. Not even as they fall. Not even as they disappear after a breath.

He cannot hate them, when they stand together like this, perfect and still in this moment.

“You deserve so much better than me”

“You deserve so much better than me,” Madara says.

Half-joke, half-truth, because there’s no way better than to say his fears than with a laugh. Despite his words, he’s still holding on to Kohaku’s hand as they lay facing each other. A little too tightly, especially for someone who knows he doesn’t deserve this at all.

What did he even give Kohaku but frustration and pain? At times like this, he’s not sure. He tried — of course he tried. But to what end?

And here, despite the laughter, despite the way he holds Kohaku’s hand, he waits for Kohaku to be sick of him. To push him away and say exactly what Kohaku should have, a long time ago: you’re right, I do deserve better.

But none of that happened.

Kohaku lets him hold his hand. Kohaku continues to look at him.

Then, he sighs.

“Go to sleep, Madara-Han,” he says. He holds Madara’s hand back, just as tightly. “This’ll pass by morning.”

And what will he see then?

Closing his eyes to the most beautiful sight in the world, Madara finds himself still unsure.

But he’ll accept a beautiful dream tonight.

Guardian of the way home

This is a lie, Kohaku knows, but only in that soft and gentle way that lies can be.

Just this one last night, he thinks as he fastens the last of his outfit as Double Face around his form, one last dawn to come and I will be ready to let this all go.

To part with this darkness. To walk away from the idea of them.

This is a lie, Kohaku knows all too well, because they have one more song to sing and he has to sing a farewell worthy of them.

And it is a lie he speaks with a wry smile because he knows it is what Madara needs to hear.

Because the truth is, Kohaku will never be ready to let go of what he doesn’t want to let go of. Or rather, he will never ready himself for something he knows he will never do.

But he lies, see, because the lie is gentle and soft.

The lie will let Madara walk forward, and will let Kohaku remain as his guardian to his way home.

Home isn’t a place for someone like him

Home isn’t a place for someone like him.

He doesn’t like having to belong to a place, not when there’s a world to see. And he doesn’t like having to tie his name to somewhere when he can simply carry it with him and make it his own.

Sure, it gets lonely sometimes. That’s what it’s like being alone. But at least, he will be fine. He doesn’t have to hurt, he doesn’t have to feel the suffocation of a place far too dark.

And then there’s Kohaku. A boy of contradiction, encased in amber for far too long yet blooming loudly with petals stained with blood.

A boy who asks for his heart, and holds it gently in his hand.

When Kohaku smiles at him, Madara knows that home isn’t a place for someone like him.

But home can be a person.

No, home is a person for someone like him.

He simply couldn’t say it yet — even as the truth cuts deep with that heart he has long given to a boy who will hold it with care.

He has never envisioned a happy ending for them, but he’s never expected a tragedy either.

After all, a tragedy cannot exist without love, and he’s promised himself not to fall in love. Much less with a boy who is made of raging storms and delicate flowers all at once.

He never dared to wish, he never dared to hope. He planned to walk to the end, slowly, until it would all fall apart as always.

But he should not have expected less of a storm.

He shouldn’t have expected less of flowers that bloom so brightly that it could engulf the whole world in their color come spring.

He has never envisioned a happy ending. He never envisioned a tragedy.

He never envisioned both, standing side by side secretly even when the whole world wanted them apart.

This is the youth he never had the chance to have. This is the first love he’s always wanted. And yet, the very notion of it scares him.

After all, his youth has passed. His first love has ended in a personal tragedy.

He knows full well that one simply does not get to rewrite the story of a life. Once stained with blood, then stained it is. Once a soul is cut, then scars will remain on it.

But this is the life he wants. This is the love he craves, though he shall not say it. So —

“Ye can always start again.”

This is the voice of his spring, now.

Maybe he doesn’t get to rewrite it all. Maybe this isn’t his youth, or his first love. Maybe he’s scarred and bloodied and all.

Yet petals unfurl and he realizes that maybe this is his beginning, in a way just his own.

his favorite mistake

Sometimes Kohaku looks at him with a scowl that forces Madara to confront what he believes he already knows: that Kohaku realizes that he’s a mistake.

Madara reminds himself of this, every once in a while. Whenever things get too tender between them. Whenever their lips meet and there’s a second of pause for them to think and his mind overwhelms him even though he wishes for otherwise.

It shouldn’t hurt. He should know. And isn’t it the truth? Shouldn’t he be pragmatic enough to accept that?

But it’s always Kohaku who makes it so hard to feel like a mistake.

Because after the scowl would come a hold of his hand.

After the silence there will always come another kiss, or another embrace, or another whisper of his name that is far too affectionate to be true.

He is a mistake, he knows.

But he seems to be Kohaku’s favorite mistake to make.

Maybe it isn’t fair that his first love had to end like this. Not even in heartbreak, as if the rites of youth, but in quiet acceptance that they have to be apart in front of the world.

It’s not the end exactly, he knows. The bond is still there. They are still there in the way that should matter. But they cannot have a name for them. They cannot use the world mine where others could hear.

Oh, he didn’t even get to fully learn the name of what they are yet before it is taken from them. He didn’t even get to learn the word for this feeling in his chest before he had to accept that he cannot taste it on his tongue.

His first love ended in a tragedy in front of the rest of the world. And yet — yet he has no regrets.

Even if all he has now is just in quiet, in secret — even if they were never truly in the light once — it is a story that was his own to have chosen.

And for that alone, this undoing, this acceptance for something so messy, is more beautiful than being preserved without all this being his.

he wasn’t looking for love when they first met

He wasn’t looking for love when they met. He was running away from it, in fact, eyes closed and right into the dark.

Truth is, Madara wasn’t looking for anything when they first met. Not anything that mattered, anyway. He stood with his own name barely meaning anything and his past more of a smudged, outdated map than a guide post for anything.

So, he wasn’t expecting to find — well, everything.

His own name, spoken in a voice meant just for him. His own life, there for him to face with eyes open at last.

He wasn’t expecting the return of his spring at last, late as it may be.

Madara wasn’t looking for anything when they first met.

Much less this. A love that embraces him so he would no longer run from it.

A story, a romance of youth, even if not for the world to hear.
