It was brilliant - skirting around the Sword Worlds and dodging space battles that were none of our business, eating and drinking whatever space food is available, and then an arrival at Darrian to be greeted by gunships. They seem friendly though and we're on a diplomatic mission so all is well!

Some tools I’m ok with - rotoscoping and object removal are at this point fairly old ML techniques and are far less soul destroying than the previous methods. But the generative stuff can gtfo.

I’ve been talking to people that I have a lot of respect for in the industry that are working on incorporating generative AI into their pipelines.

SO much of the cultural and artistic nostalgia that society chases was just art made when people got paid to do it. Lavish movie posters made by human artists, video games made by people without sixteen different investment companies breathing down their neck, movies made by studios taking a chance.

No shade on the city of Detroit itself, mind. I didn't even get to investigate it. I've heard some good things though, I think it's one of those cities, like Coventry, that gets an undeservedly bad reputation.

The airport is fuckass though

Detroit Airport is the only airport I have been to where I felt actively unsafe while inside the security perimeter. You're not supposed to feel sketched out when you're airside. Felt like Coventry on a Saturday night

This was over a quarter century ago though, may have improved since.

Charitably, the US was very much on the other side of the world at the time. Commercial transatlantic flights had only just started. I think we often lose sight of the heroic efforts that people had to make just to move stuff from one continent to another.

Fun fact - if you dial 911 from a mobile phone in the UK, it'll put you through to 999. Some tourists never learn apparently, so it's easier to just put a patch in ;)

Just because I explain tear gas and it’s legal position, it does not mean I am in favor of using it. I’m literally on record, in the most prominent way in serious circles, calling for more restrictions on tear gas. Don’t yell at me for not doing enough
