The participants in the so-called debate wanted fame themselves. It was an audition, hoping they were attractive enough in some form to their own camp.

But this needs to be delivered on recorded camera because people don’t read anymore. The whole point is that you are not a coward like the founding fathers writing arguments anonymously, but that you pretend there is still peace

Thus the large republic, rather than dispersing faction, has magnified it. What was meant as a check has become a mobilization. The republic has ceased to be a deliberative body, and has become an armed camp divided into tribes.

They did not imagine millions of foreigners, gathered with their own tongues, faiths, and grievances, would be brought into the body politic without assimilation. They did not imagine technology would amplify factions into mobs, binding strangers across the continent with a single rage.

But the founders mistook the nature of faction. They assumed men to be rational, tied by a common language, faith, and history — that their debates, though fierce, would always be the quarrels of brothers, not the enmity of strangers.

It was once argued, most notably in Federalist No. 10, that the extended sphere of the Union would tame the violence of faction. For, it was said, the greater the territory, the greater the variety of interests, and thus no single faction could prevail.

The founding fathers were anonymous not just out of cowardice but to avoid fame, and had to fight in an English civil war, the war of independence. That lasted until 1815, 40 years.
