Some of the road surfaces are a tad suboptimal and you may round a bend to find yourself face to face with a tractor, but it's all good.

It's undulating. And you will get soggy days especially if you're up a hill. But it tends to be drier than the west. Bikes can be transported on quite a few local buses too and the Borders railway i think.

Don't forget about the South of Scotland. There's a lot of Scotland below the Central Belt. Yes, it lack the spectacular nature of the Highlands but it's very beautiful nonetheless. (This is the Borders, south east Scotland) South East Scotland is also pretty dry and sunny!
