Are you suggesting they were interchangeable?

I can’t help but think of Carl Becker’s “every man his own historian.” Good thread that personalizes the past.

Just returned from SF where I went with my cousins & their kids to explain the history of Angel Island immigrant landing depot. It's an island off of SF, look how close it is to SF, yet for detained immigrants who were there, it was a world away to getting to the US. Was in operation 1910-1941. 1/

Fascinated to realize that In this cameo about tolerance Sinatra is hearkening back to a Bible verse: “And hath made of one blood all nations of men for to dwell on all the face of the earth” Acts 17:26

In today's episode of "I'm Dumber than a Box of Rocks," I was up at 0500, at the Y by 0540, got back, and walked into the library for today's 0800 session. Nobody's here. The calendar shows 0800. Hmmm? What about the schedule? Session starts at 1115. I'm going out for breakfast.

Yup. I shared my thoughts about that phrasing with my seminar. The CG’s former ADC, sat mouth agape as I disassembled “cognitive overmatch.” The seminar leader and most of the seminar got my thrust.

There should be such a thing as an anti-CV with all the jobs you didn’t get, the books you never wrote, and the shit that never happened.
catherinedevries.bsky.social
Every academic career is built on rejection, but we don’t show it.

CVs list publications, grants & awards, not rejected manuscripts, unfunded proposals, or failures.

But those invisible rejections shape us more than our successes ever do.

If only you'd read the books and articles I've written. The accolades and prizes I received were humbling. I've been turning down speaking and documentary opportunities to relax and regenerate at the Napa Valley vineyard and winery purchased through my book royalties.

Back to reality. Sigh.

If you haven’t heard of the Military Intelligence Service, they were Americans who used their language skills to support Allied operations at Guadalcanal, Bougainville, the Philippines, Burma, Okinawa, and elsewhere.

They eventually facilitated the transformation of Japanese government itself.

Re-upping this. Historically wonky, if you like that kind of thing. Part of my point is that past abuses, like the corruption of the spoils system, were embedded in a context that made sense of them—and, in many cases, actually limited the president’s power. Trump’s dictatorshit is entirely new.

When we say Trump is unprecedented, what do we mean?

In this podcast interview, I give a lightning review of American politics & political practice in the nineteenth century, how & why they were reformed, & how Trump is an entirely new threat to the republic.

Worth a friendly reminder that the next set of nation-wide No Kings protests are set for October 18th.

There's probably one in your area.

I am not generally a crowds or protests sort of person, but there's one in my town and I'll be at it on the 18th.
