March of 2005, I had opened a show for Robyn Hitchcock at The Iron Horse in Northampton, MA. After, a group of us found our way to a nearby open mic. Left to right: Lloyd Cole, Robyn Hitchcock, Chris Collingwood, Me, and Brian Marchese. With Hitchcock at the helm...
It's funny to think of encore hoots and applause as a whole room full of little kids in a pool yelling, "Awe come on! Five more minutes! Five more minutes!"
I've seen various strategies over the years -- back in 2000 the Melvins just stood there silent for a few minutes then went back in -- but I appreciated Gruff Rhys having this projected at the end of his show in April as he walked off singing and playing his acoustic guitar.
Projection from the end of a Gruff Rhys solo show in April reading "RESIST PHONY ENCORES" and a doll with a "The End" sign in front of it on a chair.
I like to do countdowns at the end of shows. "we have five more songs", "we have three more songs". It IS nice as an audience member to know how much longer you'll be standing. But, when we get to zero more songs people are still unsure because musicians have been crying wolf for so many years.
I think the encore tradition might be on its way out. At the last few shows I've seen, they've eschewed the whole process. I'm torn. On one hand, encores often feel sort of forced and embarrassing but on the other hand, it's nice to have a marker for the show being almost over. It's not so sudden.
I can't believe this kid grew up to be Speaker of the House.
Have a great tour!
I'm going to have a new solo album out in 2025. I just know it.
Even at the time I remember thinking that doesn't sound right.
Gina Birch at The Sinclair in Cambridge, MA - October 12, 2025.

Her band couldn’t get their visas so she played an unexpectedly “bespoke” show with a laptop.

I'm already upset about all the A.I. Christmas card designs that will inevitably be everywhere this year.
It's always great when the artists you meet are happy to be there. (When performing too)
I believe so. A little bit further down Newbury Street.
This one was on the end of Newbury Street (if I have my streets right). I got an autograph from Andy Partridge there once.
I kind of remember this. I think we billed this gig as the Unauguration Show.

I remember when this photo was taken. It was outside the studio when we were making The Whole Point of the Trip. Late October I think.
I think you can get 1TB thumb drives for pretty cheap. maybe transfer to one of those (or two for backup) just to hold onto if u think it might be important.
I realized right after I wrote it. Of course. My apologies.
