Hurts seeing so many of these notices during #ASHG25, but even sadder to see one with a Reviewer's Choice Award
Paper on a poster board that reads "Due to the ongoing government closure, this poster could not be presented as planned. ASHG remains committed to sharing this important work through alternative channels at the earliest opportunity." Next to it is pinned a blue ribbon that says "Reviewer's choice"

Related: If any other trans or nonbinary folk are attending #ASHG25, I would love to connect!

Especially students who haven't had a chance to meet an older trans scientist. I wish I had that kind of mentor, but I'm happy to try to be that for others 💖🏳️‍⚧️🧬

"You make the best of it all and hope you can help make it a little better for the gurl after you."

- Miss Major, 2023 💔
One of the things I hear with some younger trans people I know is they feel, "I'm gonna get this surgery, and I'm gonna learn that way of speaking, and I'm gonna be done." You're never done. If you're a straight, cisgender person, you're never done. Things are always happening that have the potential to change you. So all I am today is not who I'm gonna be tomorrow, because of the things that happened to me today and later tonight. People forget that. "Oh, after I transition, I'm gonna be through." Well, good luck with that. 'Cause if you're through, then it's time to leave, you know, and I don't wanna go anywhere yet.
I'm in my seventies. Why didn't I stop? Number one is community. My gurls. I've had moments of thinking about stopping, but I didn't. I made sure I would step back, reju- venate myself, and then got back out there, and that's how you make a way. Our stories are not all the same, but the destination is: to get some place where we have some peace and harmony, and we can be at ease with ourselves and the people around us. You make the best of it all and hope you can help make it a little better for the gurl after you.

Vaccines are safe and effective.

Autism isn't caused by vaccines, and autistic people and their families deserve our support.

When you want information, ask your doctor.

It's more important than ever for all of us to speak plainly, truthfully, and directly about public health.

I want to invite the speakers and moderators of the session “Autism Spectrum Disorder: From Genetic Variation to Neurobiology” to attend my talk on community engagement and the following Q&A, with highlights from autism genetics. Wednesday 8:30, room 253ABC, level 2. 🙂#ASHG25

The four presentations are followed by a panel discussion and an audience Q&A. We are looking forward to meeting you there! 5/5

My talk, "Toward Justice and Community Empowerment in Genomics Studies on Sensitive Traits,” highlights lessons learned from community engagement efforts in genomics studies on socio-behavioral and neuro-psychiatric traits, and envisions a path forward for a more just and inclusive research. 4/5

The session is moderated by Christa Ventresca (UMich) and @metecivelek.bsky.social (UCLA), and I'm joined as a speaker by Emerson Dusic (Umich), Tala Berro (Kaiser Permanent) and Kristina Suorsa-Johnson (U of U). 3/5

The session addresses issues related to clinical and genetic research to gender identity, sexual orientation, and variations of sex characteristics. We will highlight research findings, ethical concerns, and practical implications through the lenses of bioethics and community engagement. 2/5

Biomedical and genetics researchers are not incentivized to do work that aligns with the autism community’s needs and priorities. The groups and individuals benefitting from the current state of biomedical autism research are labs working on finding the causes of autism and supplement salesmen. 6/6

So far, studies on autism “risk” and have failed to produce concrete benefits to the autism community. Autism researchers continue to justify their goals with the rising rate of autism diagnoses, often ignoring the major impact of increased awareness and knowledge. 5/

The projects funded by the Autism Data Science Initiative (ADSI) largely aim to identify the causes of autism, with little to no focus on the areas of research that stakeholders consider most important: health, quality of life, and applied research with tangible real life implications. 4/

Now, the HHS has announced that 1) acetaminophen causes autism and 2) folate supplements (sold by Dr. Oz) can be used to “treat” autism. In an effort to find new targets for intervention, the NIH is also investing $50M in research dissecting the genetic and environmental contributors to autism. 3/
heinimnatri.bsky.social
The complex nature of autism, lack of definitive answers from biomedical research, pressure on autistic individuals and their families, and deliberate exploitation have contributed to the proliferation of pseudoscientific bogus remedies for autism. 2/

Why do so many disease risk variants show no regulatory effects in GTEx and/or other standard eQTL studies?

What do we mean when we say a regulatory effect is "context-specific" and how do we define the context?

We explored these questions using brain organoids and oxygen stress.

It’s so gross to demand proof that someone “matters” for them to deserve health care. We are a rich country and *everyone* matters

Dr. Oz says that people must “prove that they matter,” otherwise they'll lose their Medicaid.

Enforcing work requirements for Medicaid is an assault on people who have #LongCOVID

People will have to get medical professionals to certify that they are disabled, otherwise they'll lose Medicaid. Why?
