1966. A young man in McMinnville, OR writes to Republican Governor Mark Hatfield’s office to inquire about forming a Young Republicans club. Later in life this person would go on to write an admiring book about a Waffen-SS unit and be one of Oregon’s more prolific dealers in Nazi memorabilia.

I thought that you might be interested in knowing that I attended the the YR convention in Salem on the last night of the convention. It was very interesting. I hope that the Republican Party is more organized than the segment at the convention.
I am also going to Beaver Boys! State at Oregon State University where I will study oity, state, and. rederal governa ment. I am going to be elected Governor of Boys' State which w111 ontitlo me to a trip to Washington, D.C. I am being sponsored by the American Logion.
I recently heard on the news that Tom MoCall and Robert I.
Thornton are considering conducting an investigation of the John Birch Society to determine whether or not it is a political organization which would cause it to fble certain information under the Oregon Corrupt Practices Act. Although I was never a member of the JBS I attended all the public and private
meetings for a period of eight months. I have met Robert Welch and other important members of the Society. I foel that I have learned a great deal of information about the Society during this poriod of time: I would be glad to furnish Tom McCall and Robert Thornton with any information that they might desire free of charge.
I do not hate this organization or anything like that. I merely object to the attitudes to some of its members. I feel that this organization is political. Speaking in Baxter Hail lounge will be Ernest Swigert, Port-land, 1957 president of the National Association of Manufacturers.
The ultraconservative John Birch Society has been subject of controversy recently.
To be shown at 7 p.m. in Waller Hall will be the film, "Op-eration Abolition," dealing with student demonstrations in San Francisco last May against House Un-American Activities Committee hearings.
Following the film a record will be played presenting an opposite version of the incident, issued by SLATE, said to be a University of California campus group.

I believe the patriotic American position is to be anti fascist and to be willing to fight in self-defense of one's rights and freedoms under the Constitution. If this admin pushes extremist policies that harm Americans and oversteps Constitutional bounds, you have a right to stand your ground.

But let's be clear: the group chat includes a State Senator, a Trump Admin official, and multiple Republican staffers — and some of the worst comments came from folks associated with Mike Johnson, Elise Stefanik, and Mike Lawler.
