What better time for an intro post than #LGBTQSTEMDay!

Hey y'all! I'm queer, disabled🦻🏻, and often distracted by birds 😜.

I work in bird conservation in an academic-adjacent role - think population monitoring and reporting. Florida Scrub-Jays are my current professional (& personal) jam.
A selfie of Hannah, a white woman with brown curly hair. She's wearing a colorful headband and has a headlamp around her neck. The background is filled with pines and lush sub-tropical tropical vegetation. A white woman in a white-and-navy striped long sleeve shirt looks off into the distance with a smile on her face. The background is filled with lush tropical vegetation.

This photo was taken by a friend while we were on vacation on Costa Rica; none of us were fully prepared for how distracted I would be by nature whenever we ate outside hahaha. A blue and gray Florida Scrub-Jay perched on a delicate oak branch.

Please share, only 4 hours left: the giving circle has a special dose of hope: one of the families is expecting a baby very soon (🧿) !!!

With lack of food, shelter, medicine, we MUST step up for this malnourished mom. Anything helps.

I'm 100% with Ryan on this (and not just because I was on the same trip)!! Anthropomorphizing can of course go too far, but I've seen over and over again in my outreach work that a little bit can really help people connect to nature more!

I have a lot of complicated feelings about the Catholic Church after growing up in it, but they do get some things right.

Chicago priest Fr. Larry Dowling describes procession to ICE facility: “No one had the courage to speak directly to us. No one from Homeland Security could stand in the presence of the Monstrance holding the Blessed Sacrament. No wonder. Evil is repelled, recoils in the presence of Christ.”

Ha! Then I'll continue with my plan to study and absorb bird info on the couch instead of watching tv, and then bring the knowledge in the field but not the book!

For friendsofabracadaver on tumblr, a Least Bittern! Big thanks once again for the #Waymakers donation. The challenge is over for this year but I'll be wrapping up bird art for donors over the next couple weeks. Much appreciation to all of you who joined in!

🎨🪶 #BirdArt #SciArt
Digital painting of a Least Bittern clinging to green reeds as it aims downward, watching the water carefully for movement. It has yellow eyes, a very sharp pointy beak, and a mottled gray-yellow-reddish back. The water surface is murky and covered in little green duckweed leaves.

haha yes that sounds perfect for it! if I wasn't in an apartment and had a yard that could support it I would totally get some!

Well uhh that's something I guess 😬

(Depending on how far you're willing to travel, check out Sweet Bay Nursery. They're in Parrish, which is def worth the trip from Highlands Co but maybe not if you're further east and/or north. Lovely staff and good selection of natives.)

it's time I finally step up my shorebird ID skills (I live by the beach afterall!) so I was looking at guides but oof I didn't realize the weight of shorebird knowledge 😅
Screengrab of a book details page showing the cover of 'The Shorebird Guide' and listing details including the publisher and publishing date, number of pages, and product type. The dimensions section reads "9.0 x 6.0 x 1.1 inches | 35.4 pounds" (there is no way the book is actually this heavy).

So weird! It *is* my birthday and I keep getting confetti over my profile pic but thankfully it hasn't asked if I want to tell any collaborators yet.

1993: I was born and while I wouldn't say I'm following in Darwin's footsteps (which is for the best, they're a bit 😬 at times) I also enjoy staring at nature and making observations.

Happy birthday, birthday buddy!

Yep, I'm a Florida scrub-jay researcher and this bird is in one of the populations I monitor!

4 bands seems like a lot but they hardly weigh anything (~1g total) compared to the bird's bodyweight (70-85g). The population is large & all individuals have unique combinations, so everyone needs a few!

best cellphone photo I’ve ever taken of a Florida scrub-jay and it's sitting on my truck 🙃
Photo of a banded Florida scrub-jay perched on the side mirror of a silver pickup truck, with palmettos and a few tall pines in the background.

For #VacationSundays no. 14 I met up with some friends for what turned out to be a jam-packed day! It was about to rain for a lot of the morning & the waves were rough so we chatted on the beach, then escaped the rain in a small local aquarium, grabbed lunch, and ended the day with some swimming!
Photo of a stormy blue-gray sky over a greenish-blue ocean inlet between two rocky jetties. Photo of a tiny sea star suctioned to the wall of an aquarium tank. Photo of a very green seagrass aquarium exhibit. Some small fish are visible near the center of the image, most of them are silvery but two have some fun striping.

There was a fish in this exhibit (but sadly not visible in this photo, it seemed to be shy) called the 'slippery dick wrasse'. I highly recommend looking them up, they look fun and their reproductive biology is super interesting!

Let that sink in

"Despite its extreme population density, Gaza was mostly self-sufficient in vegetables and poultry, and met much of the population’s demand for olives, fruit and milk. But last month the UN reported that just 1.5% of its agricultural land now remains both accessible and undamaged."

I'm a big fan of @casetify.bsky.social! Fun designs, availability for lots of different phones (including older models of popular brands), and protection at least as good as otterbox (impact or bounce series)!
