This isn't primarily a money/class thing; many students with well-off parents have jobs too, and it can give you a leg up with employers who prioritise a well-rounded cv over grades. But a single-minded, study-focused cv certainly gives you an advantage when applying to grad school.

In my country it's pretty common for students to have part-time jobs. My impression as a student was that parents with PhDs were more likely to go against this culture by financially supporting their kids so they could focus entirely on their studies, do unpaid research internships, go abroad etc.

I hate this stupid idea that analysing literature will 'ruin it'. "Maybe the curtains are just blue lol" stfu you are not sticking up for beauty and common sense, you are being boring and uncurious

My favourite kind of project: turning my own old clothes (2 pairs of trousers in this case) into things for my kids. Sustainable clothing with instant history, & a dent in the mending pile :)

(The part I dislike is OG 'Takedown' being used as the credits song. seems to reinforce the message on a meta level. would've been nice to have Rumi's rewritten version instead, esp since she never managed to complete her rewrite in the film)

I give almost everything I sew or knit away as gifts or to charity. It's weirdly A LOT easier to give something valuable away for free than to make it part of a capitalist exchange that will inevitably require you to undervalue your time & labour.

Ja die constructie noemen taalkundigen 'gapping', je laat dan in de tweede helft van een parallelle constructie het werkwoord weg. "Oude vrouwtjes jaag ik de straat op & knaapjes (jaag ik) het wakke ijs (op)".

Was told today about Indigenous people in Brazil who were desperate to vote against Bolsonaro. There were no polling booths in their villages so they got buses to the city, and when the military blocked their buses many miles from the city they got off and walked there. Fight for your vote, always.

if anything the elder goths are *more* legit! it's honestly amazing to meet people who've been sitting with the world's darkness for decades and you just know that their 'fuck you' to society is real and earned. there's something oddly comforting about it in these genuinely dark times.
