My video tutorial on creating a simple volumetric fog shader in URP is finally out for everyone to watch!🎉

This should be a gentle introduction into volume raymarching and a good starting point for some really cool effects 🌫

Hello #PortfolioDay! I'm a technical artist currently looking for work.

I am experienced with:

✨Shaders (Unreal / HLSL)
💥 VFX (Niagara)
💾 Optimisation
🛠️ Tooling (Blueprints and a little Python 🐍)

Currently learning Houdini and aiming to update my portfolio, but here's some of my current work 🌟

Hah it's cause it's "just" volumetrics, with no particles involved ✨

It's only for URP, as I don't think I could match the features that the HDRP volumetrics already offer 😅

Thanks Will! Yeah, planning on submitting it soon ✨ it's just a froxel-based volumetric fog/lighting system, with an integrated screen space multiple scattering effect for that cool blurring in the distance

Started playing a big of Hellblade II the other day, and that first level really inspired me to see if I could get a similar vibe in Unity with a handful of megascans and a bit of HAZE 🌫

Really dig the results, especially for ~1.5 hours of messing around 👀

That's the main reference from the game for my version btws
Screenshot from Hellblade II showing the protagonist, Senua, in a foggy Nordic beach environment

Quick screen capture to demonstrate the effect HAZE has on the scene 👀

If all goes well, soon you'll have a chance to try out HAZE yourself too ✨

I only got to play the first 20-30' so far, but the atmosphere and visuals are immaculate, I really look forward to playing more!

Hi-res screenshot for some more details
Screenshot of a 3D scene made in Unity. The scene depicts an environment similar to a nordic beach, with a lot of rocks scattered around and some dead trees here and there. A heavy layer of mist covers the area, blurring the rocks and hills in the distance.

The original comments were made in bad faith. "DEI" is the racist dog whistle of people who get offended when they see a girl in a hijab. It's blatant racism.

There was no room for debate or nuance, and suggesting otherwise gives bigots an inch that they will take for a mile
halisavakis.com
However, while I recognize that your comments weren't added in bad faith (at least intentionally), they are formed in the way that would spark a debate about barely relevant subjects (those of pandering etc)

That poses a problem: it moves the conversation and introduces a nuance that isn't there
halisavakis.com
The comment about blocking was relative to whether you perceive "DEI" to just be a bad thing that brings "wokeness" to everything, a very specific complaint that has very specific links to conservative bad faith arguments, therefore there would be no need for further conversation
halisavakis.com
Those comments and reviews are not about constructive criticism but about promoting a very specific pattern of bigotry amongst games. There's no nuance in this particular climate and no good faith debate can be had, when the mere existence of women in a game gives them a reason to complain like that
halisavakis.com
But conflating the representation of minorities, however flawed, with what the bigots in the screenshots are complaining about (which, in some cases is just the mere existence of female characters) is very, *very* off base and promotes a very dangerous rhetoric
halisavakis.com
What you're describing with dragon age and some other media is more of an issue of pandering and potentially "queerbating" which can be more precisely attributed to bad writing or, in the case of dragon age, the development hell that it's been put through.
halisavakis.com
I'm starting with that because if you're knowingly using that term in that context, that's an instant block.

My quote repost was about making fun of the use of that term in that context, cause it doesn't even make any sort of sense at this point.
halisavakis.com
Calling the existence of a minority "DEI" is a dog whistle for bigots. It's conflated with "wokeness" (for "things they don't like") but in a more offensive tone as it hints at the rhetoric that with DEI programs unqualified minorities are stealing jobs from white men, which is a very bigoted POV
halisavakis.com
First off:
"DEI" initially refers to the "Diversity, Equity and Inclusion" programs that incentivize companies and organizations to provide opportunities to minorities, a version of what used to be "affirmative action"
halisavakis.com
Would love to see that aforementioned "DEI consultant" behind the shoulder of each developer being like "not woke enough, throw more women in there"
halisavakis.com
A bit random, but I love how they straight up stopped making any sort of sense even within their bigotry

Wtf is "DEI" about having female characters in a game? Do the devs get monetary incentives or tax breaks for every female character? Is it "affirmative action" to have any minorities in a game?
