A Roman fibula shaped like a panther with a human rider on its back, crafted in bronze with colorful enamel inlay.
Panthers were linked to the god Dionysus/Bacchus, often depicted as his favored mounts, suggesting a symbolic or protective function for fibulae ...🧵1/2

The other scenes show Protesilaos arriving in Troy, his soul leaving his dead body, Protesilaos being allowed to return to his newly wed wife Laodameia, the reunited couple at the center, and Laodameia mourning his return to the underworld.

#ClassicsTober25 Day 12: Styx

On this sarcophagus, Protesilaos is accompanied to the banks of the Styx by Hermes Psychopompos, where Charon's boat waits to bring him back to the underworld, after he spent 3 hours with his wife Laodameia.

If you haven't seen the exhibition with the amazing finds from San Casciano dei Bagni in #Berlin, you should absolutely go!

The bronze votives are more than incredible 💓

Just prolonged until November 9th, 2025: www.smb.museum/en/exhibitio...

#AncientBluesky 🏺 #Archaeology
Bronze votive statuette of a sitting chubby baby boy, with a large bulla around his neck and an Etruscan inscription on his right thigh. Bronze statuette of Apollon drawing his boy. The picture shows the elegantly curved figure from the back. A bronze votive showing half a torso. This almost life-size statue was worked in such a way that it only depicts only the left half of the torso with the left arm, but without the head. Latin inscription on the chest. Back of the head of a small female portrait bust with a first century CE braided hairstyle. The single strands of her hair are delicately incised.

So soccer was Roman after all!?

Bronze votive statuette from San Casciano dei Bagni, 1st c. BCE.

Currently on view in the exhibition "The Bronzes of San Casciano dei Bagni" in #Berlin: www.smb.museum/en/exhibitio...

#AncientBluesky 🏺 #Archaeology
Bronze statuette of a standing child dressed in a belted, short tunic. In its left hand, the child holds a small boy. Its left arm is decorated with two bracelets and a ring on one of its fingers. Detail of the hand with the ball. The ball seems to consist of hexagonal patches like a modern soccer ball.

Nee. Was Chancen blockiert, sind Perspektivlosigkeit und ständiges Umbewerben. Projektstrukturen, d.h.

Doch was könnte, was sollte danach kommen?

For #ClassicsTober25 Day5, I repost this votive relief of the 3 Moirai (or Parcae)!

#ClassicsTober
haeferlkaffee.bsky.social
On #ReliefWednesday we meet the 3 Parcae who watch over the thread of life:

Nona, on the left, spins the thread from her distaff and spindle.
Decima, on the right, weighs the thread with her pair of scales.
And Morta, in the middle, with her book of fate will cut the thread.

#AncientBluesky 🏺
Rectangular relief made of brown sandstone. In an arched niche are the three seated female figures of the Parcae wearing long mantles covering their legs and with their relative attributes in their hands. Nona, sitting on the left, holding a spindle in her right and distaff in her left. Decima sitting on the right with crossed legs and arms resting on her lap, a balance in her right hand. Central figure of seated Morta with an open scroll on her lap.

The left end of the sarcophagus' front and its sides show scenes from the boy's life: his first bath, his first riding in a chariot pulled by a goat, and school.

Images from Wikimedia Commons.
Image of the complete sarcophagus, on the far left iy the schooling scene. Right short side of the sarcophagus showing the child's first bath: the mother sits on a stool on the right. In front of her, a nurse lifts a baby from a water bowl. Further women surround the scene. Left short side of the sarcophagus: A small boy sits on a cart which is pulled by a goat. Two men accompany the cart in the background.

The deceased child is wrapped in a shroud on this sarcophagus in the museum of Agrigento. As was the social ideal, the grieving parents sitting at the sides of the bed are composed. Only the nurse and pedagogue are openly showing emotions.

#ClassicsTober25 Day 4 #ClassicsTober #SarcophagusSaturday
Lectus with a boy lying on it, his body wrapped in a shroud. A nurse standing behind the bed touches his chin, while the bearded pedagogue next to her is raising his arms in mourning. Image of the complete sarcophagus. On the left the death bed with the deceased child. On its right, the mother, her head bent down and covered by her mantle, sits in a chair. A small and chubby naked child leans onto her knee. At the left end of the bed is the father sitting on a chair, head also bent down and covered by his cloak. On the far left is a school scene: The boy is reading from a writing tablet to a headless man sitting in front of them. A pedagogue and two other men stand in the background. A column with a bust of Athena seta the scene.

For #ClassicsTober25 Day 1 Hypnos is pouring slumber from a horn over the young shepard Endymion on this mid-2nd c. Roman sarcophagus in the @metmuseum.org. Endymion falls asleep while the moon goddess Selene arrives for her nightly visit.

In his other hand, Hypnos holds a branch with leaves. Image of the complete sarcophagus. On the right, Endymion and Hynos. On the left, Selene steps off her wagon.
