We know accidents happen, illnesses appear, chance defeats us all. But the greatest danger surely must be human passion & follies. We look for reasons & meaning in human behavior and they simply don't exist. We're left only w/ awe, despair, or foolish hope

Well, to protect US manufacturing, it seems the US has tried:

1️⃣ Tariffs of 1828 -> widespread Southern recession

[ ~100 years later ]

2️⃣ Tariffs of 1930 -> deepened Great Depression, GDP ↘️46%

[ ~100 years later ]

3️⃣ Trump Tariffs of 2025 -> will probably be awesome tho?

"The irreversible gravity of killing, coupled with the lack of a substantive legal justification, is bringing into sharper view a structural weakness of law as a check on the American presidency."

Gold price growth is correlated with uncertainty. That’s because it’s considered to be a safe and stable asset.

Our military is being paid by an anonymous donor.

Our WH East Wing was demolished for a ballroom - paid for by donors.

These aren’t acts of benevolence or patriotism.

This is the oligarchy assuming control, insidiously becoming part of how we function.

Every American should reject it.

I for one refuse to believe that Shirish's mom would have suggested Budapest
NEW -- Karoline Leavitt keeps insulting HuffPost, but does not want to answer what seems like a pretty simple question: Who picked Budapest as the next meeting site between Trump and his 2016 benefactor/murderous war criminal Vladimir Putin?

Oh, oh, I know who committed the crime! Ask me, ask me!! 🙋🏻‍♂️
The survivor of a U.S. strike on a submersible vessel accused by the Trump administration of transporting drugs in the Caribbean was released by authorities in Ecuador after prosecutors said they had no evidence he committed a crime.

tl;dr Trump:

"I don't know anything about Project 2025 but I did try to get its principal author laid."
So, per reporting from Zeteo’s Asawin Suebsaeng, in today’s new ‘First Draft’ newsletter, Trump tried to get a newly-divorced Russ Vought, Project 2025 architect & now budget chief, laid at Mar-a-Lago.

The details are, ahem, as crude as you’d expect from Trump.

Yeah, if you don't believe in the thesis, then full stop.

If you do believe in the thesis, then you must also believe there will be no commoditized free AI so rents can be charged.

But China seems to be already telling us they're going to make AI free.

The brand new GOP position this morning, apparently, is that old white people suck. I kid you not. #NoKings
The investment thesis says AI

1️⃣ Will catalyze step-function adv in automation, decision-making, & enterprise efficiency which,

2️⃣ Will drive $trillions in productivity, so

3️⃣ 1st movers will moat network effects w/ defensible lead in AI services, but!

This all relies on an ability to charge rents!
It seems China has:
1️⃣ Plenty of power
2️⃣ Plenty of cheap AI (e.g., DeepSeek, etc)
3️⃣ The ability to easily build zillions of data centers

🤔 What if China makes AI a commodity, free to all?
💭 Building it into everything?

⁉️ Then how would US companies extract fees for AI capacity to justify the spend?

Tonight the president of the United States posted a video of himself wearing a crown and flying a jet that dumps diarrhea all over the United States.

Seriously. He actually did this.

WE did that.

WE out raised a 22-year incumbent Senator.

Not being even vaguely sarcastic:

At some point, a journalist needs to ask Johnson “you regularly claim you have no idea what your own government is doing. If we take you at your word, how are you so poorly informed, and do you this level of ignorance should disqualify you as speaker?”
Q: What's your message to the 170 US citizens who have been detained by ICE? About 20 of them are children

MIKE JOHNSON: I don't know what you're talking about with the children. I haven't seen that so I'm not going to comment on it.

Literally: This. Is. How. It. Happens.

Especially pernicious because the effects are largely invisible even as they accumulate. It just seems like the opposition is weak and ineffectual; you never see what people would have said and done if they weren't threatened and intimidated.
This is not a minor issue: it’s a serious threat to democracy. We’re rapidly transitioning into a world where, as long as you support the president, you can be above the law; if you’re in the opposition, you have a target on your back. Opposition can’t survive under these conditions.
I think at this point it’s fair to say that we’re no longer under the rule of law.
