It's not surprising that country would want to boost its soft power, but I am also not thrilled about how American policy enabled that. And now, I worry that they will be effective in supporting autocratic movements in our country.
Idk. I can't speak for others, but a lot of my "China Anxiety" is not about their development, but their relationship with the world. In hindsight, it looks like they laundered the normalization of trade relations to promote their soft power and to support other autocracies around the world.

Guys wait is Trump really going to personally show up in the tariff oral arguments to stare down the judges like in that scene from the godfather
Oral arguments on tariffs are set for Nov 5 and he plans to show up in person. I think there’s a good chance he doesn’t lose outright because Roberts et al like empowering him, but if he thought he was on stronger footing he probably wouldn’t be the first president ever to go to oral arguments

Really think the biggest win today aside from just numbers is negatively polarizing the regime of 12-year-olds into fully adopting #YESKINGS as their official stance.
I'm not answering a knock when I'm inside. It's locked, just try it and it will be clear it is occupied

Refreshingly normal take
I think she actually does make a good argument, but it's ultimately an argument for not doing so much work on the emergency docket! The lower courts are doing fine.
The substance of what she's saying is bad and unconvincing, but more fundamentally, I really don't think Supreme Court justices should be going on book tours where they publicly comment on their work and respond to criticism of it. Either put it in a written opinion or hold your peace.
Amy Coney Barrett defends heavy use of the shadow docket: "If we wrote a long opinion, it might give the impression that we have finally resolved the issue, and in none of these cases have we finally resolved the issue."

I’d argue there are unusual (not unique) things about America: despite it all the country is unusually tolerant of immigrants, unusually intolerant of authoritarianism, unusually committed to democracy. that’s not because we’re magic but because these ideas have been instilled in us so deeply

“The surest way to screw up the world’s best technical school is to let feds tell them how to run it,” Kentucky Congressman Thomas Massie wrote on X. “Congrats to my alma mater for turning down a bribe to let the executive branch dictate what happens on its campus.”
All depends on what Land Back means to folks. Can't say I've ever found a singular authoritative account of what that process looks like. I'm sure there are many which are not ethnonationalist
The conversion therapy case is another in a long line of cases of legal issues before the court that would be super frickin interesting if the outcome weren't so consequential

Like you can say what you like about me, i have extreme views, I get negatively polarized, I post way too fucking much and I hold grudges, but I don’t say things I don’t sincerely believe and I don’t ask you to pretend I believe things I obviously don’t

One reason former Republicans have been better at opposing Trump than many progressives is because they correctly understand that the GOP’s descent into fascism represents a dramatic shift, and is therefore scarier, where the latter groups feel the need to argue it’s just a continuation of trend

some people will never vote for Democrats, or any party derived from them. they need an option that is willing to lose elections with the hope of winning the next one.
She's right. It's a damn shame it doesn't exist, and we're left with a shell of a party organized around a cult of personality
this feels like forty years ago but it was 2023

I think the cycling community really needs a reminder of who personally engaged in a clandestine operation to evacuate the Afghans women's team right now. Is this the reward we want to give to a team that regularly goes above and beyond to exemplify the morals of sport?
