Happy Anniversary Dreamcast!

26 years on from its UK launch we’re still playing those titles and still have the joy for SEGA’s beautiful, and underloved, machine!

Re-live that historic period for UK gamers - and SEGA themselves - in our new vid!

This Sonic cabinet LOOKS like it’d be awesome…

… but it’s like a hybrid penny pusher and fruit machine, spitting out tickets. Boooo!!

Nice music though!!

Yeah the breakout game is so huge. But they’re not easy to come by - SEGA arguably didn’t have theirs til they were a few generations in. Nintendo got there a bit quicker but still had to grind to make it stick. Sony basically bought theirs in… none of those was an easy strategy for cd32 I suppose!
Aye, muddled strategy that. You could see them having had more of a win with a partnership I guess - they had heritage and brand, and no doubt technical expertise. But they didn’t have console experience and that seems to have bitten them in the ass!!
Yeah I can completely buy into that - there was such love for them, especially the Amiga, that with good management they should’ve been able to keep on it. Yes, the market moved away from their core product, and maybe this cd32 was a poorly landed attempt to redress the shift. But still…
Jusqu’a 6 milliards de joueurs!!

Tbh, these adverts for SEGA Rally 2 make about as much sense as what SEGA did to the gameplay…

I’m not a fan! But somebody must be as it sneaks in at 31st place.

Run Like Dance!!

Blue Stinger has always had a mixed reception but it’s become a bit of a fan favourite! (It’s up at 33rd in the rankings now!)

Special kudos to those who tried to play it in Japanese before the UK launch…! You’re nuts but legends!

#DreamcastThursday
How has the Dreamcast’s UK launch line up fared since 1999?!

Using the fount of all DC knowledge (the @TheDCJunkyard Top 200!!) we can give a scientific answer!

Starting with Sonic Adventure - a flagship in the 90s and in at No. 6 on the all time chart!!

#DreamcastThursday
Having Capcom’s Power Stone at the UK launch - with Sonic Adventure - put a huge gloss on the quality of the line up

And it was huge progress from the UK launch of the Mega Drive a decade earlier when SEGA still had to port Capcom’s games themselves!

By the time we reached Dreamcast, it felt like Capcom and SEGA were closer than ever

Capcom’s massive use of Naomi, a stellar title at the Dreamcast’s UK launch in 1999, and a huge wealth of brilliant games made them one of DC’s biggest - and best - devs!

#WhensDay
To rate Capcom + SEGA in the mid-90s, you could say “Alpha 2” and relax with a job well done!

But the range and quality of fighters, the versus games, pioneering the 4MB cart, and a decent (if short lived!) slice of survival horror makes them kinda legendary!

#WhensDay
What’s your favourite game relationship and why is it SEGA + Capcom?

Firstly,it goes WAY back - starting with SEGA’s ports of Capcom arcades in the early 90s and of course… the BIG one in ‘93!

Only one console can withstand the might of SF2 Special Champion Edition!

With most of a year already under its belt, Dreamcast had some absolute belters ready roll on its UK launch!

You’d do bloody well to beat Sonic Adventure and Power Stone for your first games - on any console!

#TwoForTuesday
Say what you like with hindsight about frame rates and rush jobs

But playing these games on Saturn launch day in the UK felt AMAZING!

This was still a huge leap for home consoles and y’know what? They played bloody brilliantly too!!

#TwoForTuesday
In the 90s, getting consoles so far after Japan and NA did suck but…

… it did have the benefit that the library had built up ready for us to get playing!

Today’s #TwoForTuesday has launch titles for us lucky folks in Blighty!!

Starting with two beauties on Mega Drive!

They don’t make covers like this anymore!

The take-no-prisoners Mega Drive cover for Midnight Resistance versus the arcade flyer…

Punchy!!

You can’t have two ads with the same tagline so I’m gonna award this one to…

Frank Thomas’ Big Hurt Baseball!

Sorry Mortal Kombat… you’re second best again!

Sonic 1 HAS to be in with a shout as best GG game

It’s just a piece of platforming perfection with awesome tunes and loads of charm.

And yes, it’s better than the Master System game.

Don’t hate me, I don’t make the rules

#8bitSunday
