I only just now read that big essay on the development history of the Xeno series.

Mr. Takahashi and Ms. Tanaka will never know what it is that they did to my teenage brain while I was dating for the 1st time (Xenogears) or right after my first truly awful breakup (Xenosaga) but I love them for it.

Doing a reread of all his stuff and like...he plays up his horror works in a way that's very intentionally theatrical, almost tongue-in-cheek at times, but the Dreamlands is where a lot of his actual soul went. It's got a vibe that's harder to pin down, though, which might be why it remains obscure.
