Reminds me of the collective shock the western world got when Soul Calibur had custom characters.

People used their real heights and were dumbfounded that they were taller than 90% of the cast.

Namely that they must be planning my mental destruction. Because it is something of a pain to trap him.

For a prequel it's simple- you need a new piece on the board to make the moves you know existing characters did not.

For a sequel it's simple power-creep. The new threat has to whup the old one or the hero to establish its menace.

Hmm... seems that Legacy of Kain comic I kickstarted is getting some blowback on some parts of the internet.

Apparently the first new lore in 20 years involving a new OC beating up one of the original protagonists wasn't taken well.

Haven't got my copy yet so secondhand knowledge is all I got.
