“It’s pathetic,” one career ICE official told me, adding that before now, a typical class of 40 recruits had only a couple of candidates fail, because the screening process was more rigorous.

This kinda thing is why I *loathe* true crime content. For one, it's gross! It always feels like the presenter's thinly veiled fetish. Second, it's conditioning us to be afraid of everyone and everything! It's like there's a whole industry that wants us to feel like we're being hunted for sport.

Literally the second sentence in this article. It will not be until the TWELFTH PARAGRAPH, that it's explained what this flag actually is.

The armed man came striding up the aisle at a conference for Wikipedia editors Friday morning in Manhattan, several witnesses said.

The man, draped in a multicolored flag, walked onto the stage and stood next to Maryana Iskander, the chief of the nonprofit group that runs Wikipedia, interrupting her speech. He announced that he was going to kill himself. He held a gun near his head and pointed it toward the ceiling.

This is a subtle, but blatant attempt to editorialize facts. The man that stormed the stage is a self-identified pedophile. It's irresponsible to bury the lead on that "multicolored flag" in this way, and if I need to explain why that is, then you should research the phrase "Manufacturing consent."

Notice two things in this article. One, how quickly the NYT mentions a "multicolored flag", and how long it takes for them to clarify what that flag actually is.

I don't think you get to keep calling yourself non-offending once you've stormed a stage and brandished a loaded handgun.

The armed man’s motivations were murky. But he was wearing a sign around his neck that said “anti-contact non-offending pedophile” and he told the audience he was going to die by suicide to protest what he called Wikipedia’s “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy on pedophiles.

King, police abolition is not about defunding every department instantly. It's about a gradual process o strategically reallocating resources, funding and responsibility away from police and toward community based models of safety, support and prevention. The people who respond to crises in our community should be people who are best equipped to deal with those crisis.

Friend I want to echo that last statement and dig down a little further. Crime isn't random. Most off the time, it happens when someone has been unable to meet their basic needs through other means. By shifting money away from police and toward services that actually meet those needs, we'll be able to get to a place where we won't need to rob banks.
