빈 필이 신년음악회를 통해 슈트라우스 왈츠의 세계적 인기 유지에 큰 몫을 하는 건 맞기는 한데, 다만 '왈츠의 왕'요한 슈트라우스 2세를 비롯한 슈트라우스 가문의 작곡가들은 생전에 빈 필과 그리 친밀한 관계는 아니었다.

지금 관점에서는 그냥 가벼운 왈츠와 폴카 등을 연주하는 소규모 무도회 전용 관현악단으로 치부할 수도 있겠지만, 슈트라우스 악단은 당대에도 상당한 실력을 갖춘 명연주자들을 단원으로 보유하고 있었다. 실제로 당시 슈트라우스 악단의 공연 기록과 연주 비평을 보면, 자작 춤곡들 외에도 상당히 다양한 작품들을 연주했다.
