I realized today
There was no right thing to say.
No right thing to do,
No way to punch through.

There was just you:
Your dreams of me.
Your schemes to be
A thing that always seems so free.

But you’re always in in the chrysalis.
Transforming, yes, but powerless.
Hiding beauty in that shell.
That shell of life I know to well.

The shell I broke when I awoke
And saw myself so clear.

But assembled,
they resembled cicada shells,
discarded hells of bodies lost.

Broken Promises.

I left your heart this morning,
but still linger in your mind.
I feel your thoughts against me,
both the loving and unkind.

And for years I’ve wallowed through them,
the quagmire and endless rhyme.
The touch and deprivation,
one broken promise at a time.

And in fear of isolation,
I would always let you leave.
But in this intimidation,
my heart became a giant sieve.

So I left your heart this morning,
to find someone new to grieve.
And you say you’re seeing clearly,
but you know I can’t believe.

Fall.

I once sought refuse in leaf strewn skies
blowing greens, golds, crimsons, browns.
As if some miraculous transformation
could touch the breath in my lungs
and make it numb to me.
But the air just feels cold now,
words feel like fire,
and both burn equally.
It’s like the sky is rarely there anymore
and the fall only collapses me.
