Beautifully succinct!
In social movement studies, we talk about how marches and protests expand the threshold of acceptable risk so that people take more and bigger social risks IN PUBLIC, EN MASSE. This is extremely important for the bourgeois white folks holding signs and building social rapport.
Not a shitpost: #NoKings is feel-good performative activism for comfortable mostly upper and upper middle class white folks and that’s good, actually. Millions of people in the streets protesting a fascist regime is good. It is good for the normie baseline to be massive displays of public dissent.
I saw someone post (Reddit I think) that the lightning bolts are actually Patti Smith’s tattoo. To think they are ss symbols is an unbelievable, outrageous reach. Do the same people think Red is a communist album?

Hi, I'm the ProPublica reporter who's been tracking an unusual stat: U.S. citizens grabbed by immigration agents.

I did it because the government isn’t.

This is what I found.
Finally! Thank you!
Wave washers are my favorite. Not into the spilt washers though.
He’s literally upset that he’s not getting a trophy
I have my grandmother’s Remington rolling block .22 rifle. It’s a lot of fun for targets. One bullet at a time, open sights, no recoil. Just fun.
I read this in his heroin throat, gravel cough, burnt coffee sip, turkey yodel snorkel voice
That’s a heartbreaking destruction of a community. I will never not be shocked by this cruelty towards families and neighbors
This discussion reminds me of how molecular biologists have been using ai for a while now to learn about protein folding, and they’ve made huge discoveries and advances. That’s artful imo.

But that is also somehow distinct from the “ai art” that we’re all talking about now.
I agree with this exactly! Like, in the 80’s music produced with drum machines and synthesizers was looked down on by purists, but look at how that’s been incorporated into the idea of what’s creative now. It’s the slop that’s the issue. We’ve never had this much slop all at once. Slop-distopia.
We’ve come full circle in this thought experiment maybe. Dadaist art had some human intention motivating it to produce something unexpected. But ai art is only about matching expectations.
I think you’re exactly right.

The original thought at the top of this thread was about if there is a parallel between the post WW1 societal reaction and now. Absurdity is maybe a common thread. I don’t know. What else?
Interesting! What did other people say about this idea?
Wait. So they didn’t actually *solve* it?
Like everything tech related now, it’s the exploitation of user data to create algorithms for profit’s sake that’s harming us. Any elected that pushes an “internet safety” bill needs to understand this is the real problem to solve.
We need to talk about how social media algorithms push moms down a slippery slope of distrust.

From "Are my kids getting enough support in school?" To "Maybe I should homeschool." To "Maybe modern medicine is bad."

I've seen this first-hand in research I'm doing on parenting apps. 1/🧵

The parallel between Dadaism and ai probably breaks down though when you realize the slop is intentionally created as attention traps to sell views/clicks to advertisers. It’s capitalism. At least the Dadaists were trying to make a statement.
There’s probability weighting! You don’t think he peaked in the hat at least a little?
Basically it is. Just with way less water and power consumption
What if the AI slop is the Dadaism?
You really are always first to get the story Marisa
Omg me too.

aaaahhhhhhhhhhhh
This is just amazing
"What do you have to say about the capitulation that you participated in?"

Cory Booker clearly wasn't expecting the pushback he got from @ivehaditpodcast.bsky.social
