Today is #GlobalFertilizerDay, but here’s the truth:

Chemical fertilizers poison our food system, deplete our soil, pollute water & air, while tying global food prices to fossil fuel markets.

A few corporations profit. The rest of us pay the price.

A black barrel on an orange background, with a big plume of toxic smoke coming from the barrel. The text reads: Chemical fertilisers fail the world. From toxic air to poisoned water, they leave destruction in every part of the food system, fuelling pollution, emissions, and corporate control. A black barrel against a backdrop of agricultural land. The text reads: How do fertilisers fail the world? Overuse of chemical fertilisers is fuelling climate breakdown, polluting land and water, and driving up food prices. It's time to shift away from fossil-based agriculture.

It’s time to stop another megafarm.

Holbeach Poultry Ltd wants to build a new factory farm that would slaughter over 3 million chickens a year – causing enormous climate and environmental harm.

It’s clear: supermarkets won’t deliver the transformation of our food system that we need.

We're calling on the government to back the alternatives that put #PurposeOverProfit – for climate, nature and justice.

Across the UK, grassroots and community-owned alternatives to supermarkets are already proving what’s possible:

🌱 Promoting healthier diets
🍎 Farmers paid three times more
💡 Less food waste and greater access to local, sustainable produce

(5/6)
foodrise.bsky.social
The good news? There is clear demand for change to our supermarket-dominated food system.

Our new YouGov polling shows:
📊 54% of Brits think the best way for supermarkets to be run is by cooperatives (not private companies)
📊 65% think £1million supermarket CEO salaries are too high

(4/6)
foodrise.bsky.social
The UK government’s food strategy promises to deliver a better national food system.

But expecting supermarkets to drive the transformation needed is wishful thinking at best, delusion at worst.

(3/6)
foodrise.bsky.social
Big supermarkets are fundamentally unfit to deliver a food system that works for people, farmers, and the planet.

❌ Farmers exploited
❌ Junk food over fresh produce
❌ Rising food waste and climate breakdown
❌ Families locked out of healthy, affordable food

(2/6)
foodrise.bsky.social
🚨 54% of people think the best way for UK supermarkets to be run is by cooperatives.

Yet profit-hungry supermarkets currently control 96% of British food retail.

Our new reports show why the corporate-led approach to is harming our food system – and highlight a better alternative. 🧵 (1/6)

The world’s first-ever legally binding food waste reduction targets are now a reality in the EU. Here's why it matters:

👉 40% of the world’s food is wasted every year
👉Food waste generates 8–10% of global greenhouse gas emissions
👉 33 million Europeans cannot afford a quality meal every second day

Positive news! Lidl GB has achieved nearly 700% growth in its own-label plant-based products and milk alternatives since 2020.

Great to see Lidl working towards its target of supporting more sustainable diets — it's time for other retailers follow suit.
