sure, I think there's clearly a spectrum here, a £2 paperback you got to make notes in for a book club is not the same as a hardback Folio edition you might pass on to your grandchildren

Guy who claims not to care about books as physical objects: 'a pristine, unread book is a tragedy'

"tell me something wild you think about books"

*a bold truth teller stands up and says the same thing we've all heard a thousand times before, but somehow more boring now than it was six months ago*

I can tell you as someone who works on early medieval manuscripts, some of those books were not read. Over a thousand years ago they were killing a whole herd of cattle to make a book that sat on a plinth and looked pretty, so some bishop could say 'yes I have that text in my library'. So good luck

The veneration of Books As Objects misses the point entirely. If you're reading a book, turn the corners down, break the spine, spill soup on it. It's your book, go nuts. A pristine, unread book is a tragedy in a way that a beloved, much-read book that looks like the dog's been at it could never be.

Tell me your most unhinged literary opinion, as a little treat

people really underestimate the extent to which most writers are very fruity

I'd say 'ask a book illustrator whether they agree that too many people value books as objects' but good luck finding a single person who makes their primary living from illustration
florencehrscott.bsky.social
Are all these people who venerate the Book As Object in the room with us now? Because the vast majority of books sold are cheap supermarket paperbacks with stock image covers that are literally designed to fall apart. Who is winning this discourse in reality
florencehrscott.bsky.social
God not this again. We complain about people venerating books as objects while book illustration is one of the most undermined and underpaid professions on earth

At the bank I was told "pick your four digit pincode but it can't be a year." "Aren't they all years?" I asked. We sat in silence for a bit.

The best dressed woman on earth just died, meaning that position is now taken by the girl reading this

yeah, and instead of latin homework it's his child he's neglecting

I'm going to alienate people with this take, but mead is DISGUSTING. It was surely a con by Big Viking Chief to get people to want to die in battle

The cough medicine I'm taking tastes so close to mead that I'm being blasted back to my medieval-studies-postgraduate days with every spoonful. One more dose and I'm going to load up Crusader Kings II and have a panic attack about not doing my Latin homework

I just practice non-monogamy, ethical non-monogamy is incompatible with john major roleplay

I won't rest until I've bedded every political parody account on the internet
florencehrscott.bsky.social
a common pitfall of non-monogamy that nobody ever talks about: my other partner is extremely concerned that people might think he ever operated a john major parody account

I need everyone to understand that I don't actually fancy John Major, just John Major as portrayed by Jonny Lee Miller and as portrayed by Rob Palk
