The "steampunk" era was defined as one where powered equipment had to be big and was therefore limited to things like factories, the engine room of ships, or railroads. The world outside of that contained infrastructure wasn't all that different from the Middle Ages in many respects.

One of my favorite pastimes is looking at old industrial technology and imagining all the constraints/implications.

For example, steam engines due to basic principles of physics are inherently less power dense than IC.

Cinematic sublime. The insane attention to detail with which Kubrick recreated the 18th Century makes you feel like a time traveler. People accuse this movie of being cold or wooden but I think they're kind of missing the point.

The reason US tech companies don't care about efficiency is because they're completely deluded about Moore's Law continuing in perpetuity, so they think it's more important to capture as much market as possible, and some magical silicon fairy will make it 2-5x more efficient in the next 5 years.

Entire US economy is now all in for NOT making AI as energy efficient and low cost as possible. We are all tied into this scheme of maxing out CAPEX spending and ensuring that low cost AI will not happen. This is mad. When have you heard a major US tech CEO talking seriously about efficiency? Never.
