Knackered ex orienteer and map collector- now on a bike much of the time. Hill bagger. East Lothian. Unfortunately due to some authoritarian overreach from our neighbours and overlords and over enthusiastic compliance, I am unable to easily access DMs.

But agree wholeheartedly with the sentiment , but if I was still working, it would be in front of my classes today. Hopefully there will be some interesting discussion on AI material and water resources.

Apologies for posting the AI slop post by Liam Plunkett. I did not notice that replies were blocked. I don't normally amplify such posts.

Loch Assynt, #Sutherland today - I had to wait before getting onto the water so as not to ruin the mirror for some photographers. Pictures from just off the north and southern shore of the loch.Best reflections I have seen. Had to be quick as the ripples from paddling would get in front if I delayed
Dead trees standing in Loch Assynt perfectly reflected in calm water. Dull weather with low cloud giving muted colour and a lot of grey. Rocky shoreline with. fallen tree and Autumn foliage reflected in still dark waters seen from just offshore. Kalidoscope effect.

Coille Mhòr, Loch Rannoch 1975. Very enjoyable going so far into the Highlands. Much of the area is Caledonian pine wood . I have just realised that it was mapped because #UniversityOfStirling had an outdoor centre there. #OldOrienteeringMaps #OMaps #FVO
Five colour drawn orienteering map of a smallish area of Caledonian pine forest and boggy moorland. South side of Loch Rannoch. Half a course is drawn on it. I A mature Scots pine on a sunny grass slope against a blue sky. There is a fence marked with chestnut paling beyond, the paling there to make the fence visible to grouse. Beyond the fence are birches. Coille Mhòr, Perthshire

That dates it - by the 1970s the posh kids in our community never "went off somewhere". Always kept apart from us. We did and Mummy did not know the half of it, of course.

Soon after, almost all kids were battery, and free range a rarity

Guess the vowel - was always hopeless at it and I wisely waited for IT to advance before starting a teaching career. Probably related to printing presses in the hands of the partially literate and the bewildering no. of accents in England.

The very much missed Twenty Shilling Wood 1979, Comrie, #Perthshire. Used in the second 6 days. #OldOrienteeringMaps #Omaps #ForthValleyOrienteers #TaysideOrienteers
Two copies of a course (M19L Blue-brown probably) in a small runnable finely contoured area. Big clearing in the middle, otherwise mostly white. Scribed 1:10,000 scale. View of a once coppiced oakwood with little ground vegetation. Lots of many trunked small trees and the floor red with fallen leaves.

Badlands, #EastLothian #Conglomerate
Steep crumbling red crags with lots of pebbles embedded in a soft matrix. There is a pinnacle middle distance and trees in the background. Blue sky with cirrus clouds.
