Intro because it's probably time.

Chatting about books I've been reading, mostly fantasy and scifi. I might do a little romance here or there, but it's not going to be a focus.

Crochet and sewing projects, mostly finished items, maybe some WIPs.

Tea posts might happen, but it's intimidating
Did the zipper break and need to be replaced? If so, you probably need to take it to a tailor or alterations specialist as replacing them is frequently annoying and difficult, so not a good first project. It may also just be cheaper to buy another pair if this is the case b/c of the difficulty.

Not technically a horror, but a dark fantasy, as a reinterpretation of Dracula, perfect for spooky season.

This answers the question of who were the brides of Dracula and how did they feel about the whole thing?

TW: control and abuse in a relationship, probably stuff I'm forgetting.
The cover of a dowry of blood by s.t. Gibson. The bust of a woman in a red dress, wearing pearls, set against a dark background. Her eyes and part of her face are obscured by a slash of something red.
I've used spoonflower, primarily their cotton options and they seemed good quality prints that were true to color. It's been a couple of years, so it's possible that's changed, but I was pleased with them.
You can also use egg whites for extra stick, as needed, in granola bars without adding additional sugar or honey.
Fingers crossed, but I'm sure you'll do great!
I love a good smoked tea this time of year like a Russian caravan or lapsang souchang. They're a bit of an acquired taste, but also super yummy as a chai.
Given that my entire knowledge of him is his weird and creepy method acting for the joker on suicide squad, you are entirely correct on that feeling.

Low effort, but today's horror rec is a recent one - Of Monsters and Mainframes by Barbara Truelove.

It's got all the monsters you might want, a cursed spaceship, a steadfast medbot, and some mystery.

It's a great read that will keep you on the edge of your seat.

We've got another horror anthology today. This one focuses on women's voices in Eldritch horror.

Fear not, the old ones still cause gibbering madness and strange riguals in this anthology.

It also features a story with Lovecraft and his unfortunately named cat, if I remember correctly.
The cover of she walks in shadows edited by Silvia Moreno-Garcia and Paula R Stiles. A woman dressed as a priestess with an elaborate headdress carries a gold plate with curling fumes against a background of smoke and sky
Pretty much. You just want something additional to support the weight... And maybe keep it from swinging too much if you're putting books in it.
There's no real reason you can't, especially if it's closer to the size of a manga volume or paperback than a hardcover book. You may want to add some twill tape to support the bottom of the pocket, so all the weight isn't on the side seam.
There's a labeler for that! So you can escape it completely or make it opt in. It's not perfect, but it does help.

I think Dracula gets closer to the original in some ways. I re-read it recently and it's wild from an adult perspective how manipulative and nasty Dracula is. And then there's the heroes going on about how nice and helpful the others have been.

Similarly I think very few portrayals of Dracula or vampires make then conventionally attractive for the period when they're intended as a villain vs those where they're not. Although Dracula frequently can appear handsome, that facade is stripped when his evil is revealed.
Brain had to boot up, but there's also the linkage between beauty and morality, which is even more important on screen as a visual shorthand (wicked stepmothers?), and so culturally pervasive that it would be very hard to escape. Similar to that is the shorthand of evil = ugly/deformed.
I think because it's way easier to call the monster a monster when it looks and appears as we expect undead monsters to (i.e.mummies, zombies?) than to face the fact that Dr.Frankenstein is the monster. It also probably works better on screen as a visual shorthand.
Once I got past the super mega capitalism in Shroud by Adrian Tchaikovsky and the characters were in real danger, it got considerably less distressing.... Getting anxious over super evolved capitalism makes some scifi hard to read rn.
These are the dimensions of one of their absolute basic models vs their more heavy duty model. There's very little difference in their overall dimensions. The base models tend to need more maintenance in my experience than a model made for someone who's a more serious sewist.
The exception to the size are those that are intended for children or a beginner home sewist, but generally these aren't recommended for anything more than light sewing. I don't know that I can recommend them, as I've never used one.
Most home sewing machines are about the same size. Heavy duty means it's meant to handle heavier weight fabrics like denim, canvas, or leather. While you can use a typical home machine for these applications, they will struggle more over multiple layers of the fabric, i.e. seams.
Depending on your area, you may also be able to find a "used" one for a good price. You may want a heavy duty model depending on the fabrics you intend to sew. Singer and brother both offer these in the ~$200 range, but there are usually sales.
It is. I'm usually about 2 sizes down from what the packet says I should be based on my measurements.
Definitely recommend the 🪐📚 scifi feed, we've got some good regular contributors.

There are also feeds specific to writers for discussing the writing process.
As someone who's in their 20s and friends of the same age who are very into fiber arts, no. Granted we're in the Midwest US, so it's a more common hobby.

There's an assumption that people have that it's an old lady hobby, especially if it's less popular in your area, that causes that reaction.

I've not finished this yet, but it seems like a good one for today.

Seems appropriate given the Eldritch horror of Collin's workplace. The stairs are infested with something that eats people and they deal in dark deals.

TW: sexual harassment and quid pro quo in the workplace
The cover of Colin gets Promoted and dooms the world by Mark Waddell. The cover is designed to look like a tarot card with rolling red fog devouring a skyline and a human hand accepting a card from a hand that is too green to be human.
