I should start posting songs from whichever band I'm wearing a shirt of, so here's Ulthar's Cosmovore, Lovecraftian blackened death metal from VA. Chaotic but with good riffs that aren't just mindless technicality that death metal can kind of fall into.

The options I see are either a non-plant protein that you can tolerate (egg or beef), experimenting with very pure whey isolate (these are typically used to avoid dairy allergies), or stop worrying and love the lead (a lot of these levels are well below safe exposures, even over time)

even multiple a day really doesn’t matter or register on the scale of measurable health impacts for an adult, details in thread

more context for people on the consumer reports lead/protein thing, from:

Flannery B, Middleton K, Updated interim reference levels for dietary lead to support FDA's Closer to Zero action plan, Regulatory Toxicology and Pharmacology, Volume 133, 2022, 105202, ISSN 0273-2300, doi.org/10.1016/j.yr...

I mostly brought it up because your post seems to imply that it would be ok if it were just “meatheads and frat bros” consuming lead, but I think people should all be able to have lead-free supplements for whatever need or want they have, but the problem is that it’s all in our soil so plants eat it

That much sugar (that’s essentially what gainers are, various cheap carbs and cheaper protein like egg) and your worry should be diabetes, not lead
erisianrite.com
In my younger days I’d bulk with about 3500 calories of mass gainer shake (gainer + egg beaters, milk, oats) and another 1500 or so of regular food, including a rotisserie chicken before bed.

I miss those days.

The brands us meatheads generally use tested either extremely low or at 0 for lead ☺️

The bogeyman (and for good reason) I remember in the mid 00s in tech circles was Diebold, due to their notorious problems constantly found at Defcon's Voting Village and by reporters, the CEOs political activism, etc.

Democrats need to put the same extended media consuming outrage into the Young Republican Nazi chats as Republicans mustered for Biden going for ice cream.

Almost forgot today’s shirt song. This is from Dr. Colossus, a doom band from Australia that only writes songs revolving around Simpson episodes. This is an older one but still my favorite, about Smithers’ undying love for Mr. Burns

It’s tech worker Slim Fast, not a protein shake

That’s bizarre. I know at my alma mater it was part of the CS curriculum which I didn’t take, and I believe part of the EE curriculum that I failed out of. Now I wish I had taken it because I’m teaching myself it backwards from scratch

The insights are so important but the way they’re taught (at least the way I was taught) basically masked over it to focus on raw computation which was a huge disservice and something I’m still unlearning in my 30s

No just shitty ones nobody really uses. Stick to Optimum Nutrition like most people.

In brands that nobody uses lol

Note that Optimum Nutrition’s whey has been both tasty and good for you for decades now

etc. and some went so far as to get MS/GC tests of various protein products (lifters not beating the allegations), and this was 10-15 years ago.

These concerns have been around for a while, and the companies that had issues and survived largely addressed them. For example when I was in college, MuscleMilk was one of the worst offenders.

In various fitness communities, people kept spreadsheets of purity tests for actual protein, heavy metals
erisianrite.com
The commentary on this study shows who doesn’t know (dumb/bar)bell.

All the ones without detectable heavy metals are the popular and widely use brands, a bunch of the problematic ones are mass gainers, and nearly all of the problematic ones are no-name brands that nobody uses.

This is common in family style Mexican restaurants where I grew up, but usually the staff is Latino as well and more often relatives of the owners because they’re all small businesses.

I don’t see why we have to interrogate the food’s religious identity

Yup. Same with my friends who went into competition in bodybuilding and powerlifting (although the aesthetic value in PLers is certainly debatable). My dad decided not to compete early on because it was a distraction from running his business (a gym) and his family.

Outside of maybe undergrad it’s really fucking hard to hold your life together and lift and diet enough to get a great physique, especially as you age. The billionaires aren’t doing it on their own and thus aren’t even doing the discipline they are LARPing.
