This special issue stems from the workshop of the same title organised by Meriste and Mölder with Uku Tooming in Tartu in June 2023--as part of the yearly events for EPSSE. But Passion is open to proposals for special issues on emotion-related topics--contact the editors if you have an idea / &7

Finally, in 'Investigating the Fundamental Base of Emotion Science', Juan R. Loaiza advances a pragmatic account: scientific emotion concepts should be grounded in publicly accessible sources of evidence like cross-cultural linguistics and social norms, rather than first-person experience /6

In 'Constituting Emotional Phenomena—A Mach-Influenced Empiricist Perspective', Peter Zachar draws on Ernst Mach to argue that in the science of emotion, concepts and classifications partly constitute the phenomena studied through the selective choice of features from a larger set /4

Charlie Kurth challenges the assumption that emotions are classed either natural kinds or social constructions in 'Emotion, Adaptation, and Natural Kinds: A Look at Shame and Guilt'. While shame functions as a biologically hard-wired adaptation, guilt is better understood as a social construction /3

In the intro, the editors explain the guiding metaphor of the issue: emotions as 'stars' (discrete, stable entities) versus 'constellations' (interrelated, dynamic configurations). They also do a very useful lit review on the metaphysics of emotion which can be an excellent teaching resource /2

Check out the latest issue from affiliated journal Passion, the SI 'Emotions—More Like Stars or Constellations?', edited by Heidy Meriste and Bruno Mölder (Tartu). The issue asks how to categorize emotions, and how much weight should we put on the study of folk emotion concepts. Open access! /1
