Athenian democracy is often associated with citizens talking together. But deliberation was forbidden in what was arguably (by 4th century) the supreme dem institution in Athens. Why? And what does this tell us about democratic justice? My article in History of Political Thought
I’ll be in conversation with artists Margaux Smith and Heather Goodchild about their show “The Spinner, The Dealer, The Assassin” at Clint Roenisch Gallery in Toronto May 24th. If you’re here, come!

The United States has embarked on a programme of cultural and intellectual vandalism on a vast scale. Universities everywhere will feel more than ripples from the damage.
If you, like me, are looking for firm details on what’s happened so far at NEH, here’s a list of programs that are marked as discontinued or cancelled on the website. This is a snapshot - I’m sure this the impacts will grow as more cuts unfold throughout the day. #NEH #DigitalHumanities

We are outraged to learn that Canada has approved a contract for the export of artillery propellant to the Israeli military via the US, despite an explicit commitment from Minister Joly
that she would stop such transfers. www.cjpme.org/pr_2025_03_2...
Worth noting there are 264 Democrats in Congress 🧐
New — 34 members of Congress are demanding answers from DHS, ICE, and the State Department on the arrests of Rumeysa Ozturk and several other students, seemingly for their political views.

"Absent compelling evidence," the members demand Rumeysa's release & visa restoration.

Note to editors and producers: If an executive order demands action that is illegal or outside of the president’s authority, then you should not describe it as ordering something. You should say it seeks to achieve some outcome and then note it is illegal or beyond the power of the president.

Def a full prof! And I’m glad (some of) those with security are speaking out about the issue. My point was just that lack of coverage is not imho the reason why ppl aren’t adequately responding to the issue…
By “plenty” I mean lots…. Would welcome even more ;)
Just taught Wendy Browns Undoing the Demos- plenty of good work on neoliberalism and the university out there
Def agree that some liberals failed to acknowledge mounting crises (and how the red carpet was rolled out under Biden for where we are now). Still think you can be alarmed about brain drain (and if you’re here, in Canada, position yourself to benefit from it)
I don’t mean to troll you but honestly I think this point you’re repeating is really misled. People can hold more than one thought/worry/concern in their head at a time. Plenty of liberals are (rightly) freaking out about disappearing grad students, too

if you're in the US and despairing about people being pulled off the street, you need to find your nearest immigrant defence/deportation defence group and learn how to do stuff like this

By now the Trump administration’s message to non-citizen residents of the United States is abundantly clear: If you publicly disagree with us, you are not safe here.
Oh c’mon- one can be in support of basic rights for all, appalled by what is happening in the US, and also make a point about university brain drain
Question- Just arrived here from Twitter- I managed to migrate many of those I follow- but how to migrate or retrieve my X followers? Doesn’t seem like an option

I still remember when Egypt arrested AJ journalists and Western media institutions launched campaigns of solidarity.

Israel has murdered 161 journalists - including Hossam Shabat and Mohammed Mansur today alone.
In a targeted attack on his car, Israel has killed Al-Jazeera's
Hossam Shabat, who was only 23 years old and was one of the last remaining journalists in Gaza.

There are no words.
