I think this volume is what really begins TAD's exploration of family. So many blood relations feel muddy and torn apart due to the power dynamics at play. It says a lot how loudly they show that Luomen is Maomao's real father. Blood is irrelevant in the face of legitimate love and I adore that

Reading volume 2 of Apothecary Diaries reminded me how legitimately uncomfortable Maomao's situation with her biological parents is. She has to take care of her bedridden mother who hated her since she was a baby and avoids her biological father who keeps trying to claim ownership of her.
