If that monstrosity is still there and we have free elections again, I certainly hope the next Democratic administration converts that place to more offices.

There's a default speed limit. There are lots of situations where laws set out a default for things not covered. Is there something like that in the criminal code? Maybe even a misdemeanor that can get so many points in the convoluted sentencing guidelines that it threatens to become real time?
dshramek.bsky.social
I know that laws are made up and at best they're threats made by the dominate group in a society against the others, and I know resistance libs all have that hopium that some day all these fuckers will see jail time for all their various crimes. But...
dshramek.bsky.social
At some point, all the blatant impounding and law violations have to reach a criminal level right? I mean, is there a catchall default element of the criminal code that would catch things like this that don't have their own specified code? Lawsky?

Trump on the government shutdown: "We have the people that we want paid, paid. We want the FBI paid...We're getting rid of programs that we didn't like...They're going to be terminated on a permanent basis, and it's thousands of people...tremendous numbers of Democrat projects."

a real question for the roberts majority is what in their view distinguishes jim crow disenfranchisement from majority-minority districts? a related question is what in their view made the typical jim crow law — which was facially neutral — unconstitutional?

For anyone who can, a GoFundMe has been set up to help Rob's wife and their young daughter. Sending tons and tons of love and deepest condolences to Rob's family and friends.

This hits so hard. Rob was a mutual on the social media and I will always love an actual play host who has an MST3K reference in his signoff. But TTRPG is tough work and chipping into help his family would go a long way.

Hey, I know everything’s tight, but Rob was a great advocate for our #ttrpg community, a fine game writer himself, and has sadly left his family behind in the capitalist hellscape. I’ve given a bit and ask you to consider it if you can.

Children of mutants shouldn't have the same powers as their parents, nor should they feel related or be similar colors (like all blue). X-gene mutation is random, so let it be random. If someone is a third generation telepath, are they a mutant? Are they even homo superior or, like, homo psionis?

What's an opinion about X-Men that'll get you sent to jail? Is Jean really interesting or really boring? Should Logan have stayed dead? Do you think a certain x-mens outfit is positively horrendous even though people seem to love it?

The Brood Saga is better than Dark Phoenix imo 🤷

When a User goes into the Grid in Tron, they have godlike powers. When Lisa, a computer program came into the real world, she had godlike powers. Ipso facto, etc.
dshramek.bsky.social
In Tron, when Kevin Flynn enters the Grid, it looks eerily similar.
A more detailed wireframe tunnel with green and red geometric shapes made of a regular grid floating in the tunnel.
dshramek.bsky.social
Since Tron is back in the zeitgeist, let me reiterate my theory about Quorra at the end of Tron Legacy having all the powers of Lisa from Weird Science. In Weird Science, they hack into a mainframe to get more brain power for their simulation, it's a military system which looks like this.
A hexagonal tunnel wireframe drawn with yellow lines. Blue and red geometric shapes line the walls.

A lot of John Carpenter movies -- and others like The Serpent and the Rainbow -- are on my list of "Movies that could get a Mike Flanagan-esque decompressed 8-10 episode series." I don't think Flanagan is who I'd pick for Big Trouble in Little China, but the point is the same.
dshramek.bsky.social
I grew up on and love Big Trouble in Little China. I can quote it back to front. And YouTube has realized that if someone has done a reaction to that movie, I'm probably going to watch it. And they're right; I will. And every time I do, I get further on my "What if this were a mini series?" thought.
dshramek.bsky.social
The Krakoa Saga was flawed because it tried to turn the X-Men into the Inhumans after a time where Marvel tried to make the Inhumans into Mutants. Mutants shouldn't have a homeland, they should be a minority struggling for acceptance because that's their central theme.

Don't bother with "classics" in the genres of sci-fi and fantasy. Just read the stuff from the last few years. It's stunning how little you have to go back in time for those genres to get extremely white, heteronormative and patriarchal.

Tell me your most unhinged literary opinion, as a little treat
dshramek.bsky.social
This is one hundred percent true. Books just keep getting better. Especially my favorite genres. Old sci-fi novels are clunky and culturally suspect.
mattfnwallace.bsky.social
STOP adapting 80-year-old books into movies and TV series. Stop it. There are a million new novels published every year and 99% of their authors are broke. Stop giving dead people’s descendants money. Books were NOT better a century ago, they were WORSE. They were ALL
WORSE. Create in THIS century.

The cover for the Star Wars TTRPG book Edge of the Empire has Chewbacca and Han Solo on the cover, but Han is dressed in the outfit the concept art for the Smuggler in Star Wars the Old Republic wears. Similar "artist googled a thing" energy, but hilarious that it's Han's outfit.

If this administration WERE some cabal of infiltrators deliberately trying to bring down America's leadership militarily, culturally, and economically, what would they do that's different? I feel like one of those stories where Cobra Commander gets elected president and dismantles GI Joe.
