She says Western Marxism believes that the best revolution is the one still imagined. And the best revolutionaries are the ones that died.

Ypi argues that the flesh and blood humans behind the words "worker", "capitalist" are lost. That's the problem for taking socialism forward.

She also questions why all the Western socialist saints were executed/assassinated. Why they're the ones revered?

She spent her undergrad being told her experience of socialism, growing up in it, was illegitimate. All the world needs, she was told, is the perfect person and the perfect revolution.

Ypi, a philosopher of Marxism, promised her family she would never research Marx.

She reminds Western Marxists that those who have lived under socialism have legitimate insight into Marxism and shouldn't be dismissed because 'their version failed'.

Just finished 'Free: Coming of age at the end of history' by Lea Ypi who grew up in Albania in the 1980s and 90s.

It's a beautiful juxtaposition of freedom under socialism, the coming of liberalism and civil war.

It's a great read for anyone interested in struggling with political contradictions

Isn't it. And you think it can't be possible because the branch looks dead when they flower

Work in progress and inspiration.

The flowering of the red kurrajong (floral emblem of Darwin) is a sign that freshwater crocodiles are ready to lay eggs.
Painting on an easel. Cloudy grey, blue and pink background with collage to represent bark in raw umber, paynes grey and mauve. Orange flower blooming on what looks like a dead branch. Ground is stony and grey. Bright green and pink grasses in the background

AI has to be owned by the commons. At the moment is basically a massive British Museum. Full of artefacts built by nameless artisans and stolen by the colonial system.

Everyone is all about the theft of student data and nobody is about the generations of teacher pattern making mental labour (lesson planning etc) stolen to be able to make edtech work in the first place.

ChatGPT Edu is built for conning education executives into subsidising and edu-washing planet-burning slop machines via non-consensual access to young people’s creativity AND DATA while attacking their ability to learn. At a university.

For those who support the use of AI detectors, by all means feel free to attempt a response. But please don't say "I care about my students" or I care about academic integrity" because neither of those things can be true if you believe in the efficacy of detectors. Shocking,I know, but there you are

My favourite bit about my suburb is everyone goes to the Eastern European deli that sells Eastern European chips, chocolate, soda and not a tobacconist that tries to convince us it's a convenience store by stocking Smiths, Coke and Cadbury.

This is the second "think stop strategising" I've come across in as many weeks.

Higher Education investment flows towards data rich environments so to chase that investment data is pursued. We become data. How do we find the ideas that will change the world if we don't stop writing Q1s?

Thoughts?
Mary E. Brunkow, one of this year’s Nobel Prize winners in Medicine, has only 34 published papers and an H-index of 21.

She never appeared in Stanford’s ranking of the world’s top 2% of scientists.
She didn’t chase citations, metrics, or the spotlight.

Yet, she became part of a discovery that changed how humanity understands the immune system.

Today, while many are busy chasing numbers, titles, and rankings —
she reminds us what truly matters in science: the question.

🔹 She wasn’t running after the lists.
🔹 She was running after the truth.

Because in the end, it’s not about how many papers you publish…
It’s about how deeply your idea can reshape the world.

Focus on your idea, not your ranking.

We need to let the mud dry slowly so the oven doesn't crack. So today I pulled out as much from the inside as I could. This will allow the air inside. This weekend I'll light some small fires.

The chimney needs to be burnt out to draw the smoke. Cardboard is covering the vent at the back.
Deflated exercise ball that worked as a mould inside a mud oven. Sticks jammed against a brick in the middle are supporting the chimney while it's built into the oven Beer bottle used to keep a vent in the back of the mud oven. The insulation layer isn't yet finished as can be seen by the multiple layers of mud seen at the back of the oven. Beer bottle removed to show the vent in the oven that will draw oxygen in. The chimney will draw smoke and heat out. Hopefully the oven should this retain an even heat.

My kid is intent on making the back look like a bum 😅

i'll make you a deal: i will tearfully restrain myself from bringing up "surplus value" at all so long as you present a definition of working class that does not rule in car dealership owners on vibes
