Late Sweetness
Late in the season,
I ask the tree,
"Please can I take some
of your fruit?",
the easy pleasure
my hand reaches out,
amongst the almost naked,
gnarled limbs,
my fingers round
the full luscious belly
of a hard green pear,
and gently twist to snap
the umbilical cord,
and place it in the basket.
And say "Thankyou."
On the ground gnawed
and sucked broken skins
rest on mown grass,
sweetness oozes into cold air.
Soon the aroma of apple
and pear crumble inhabits
the fresh rooms of our house,
the heat in the pastry,
the knife's blade cuts
a portion.
"Blow on the spoon, love.
I need to know
if the pears are soft enough."
says my wife as she ushers
bubbling fruit and crumble
to my quivering tongue

I like autumn mornings when the sun rises later -and so do I!

FORGERY

Outside, too soft like a berry,
easily bruised or pulped underfoot, ultimately
misshapen and unrecognisable as fruit.

Inside, too much water, rising like a tide,
eyes holding surface tension
inside a quiver-rim of skin.

The wash recedes, leaving hollows
as it long-trawls dregs
in the comb of emotion,

and deposits them thick at every shore,

clogging words to soggy syllables.
Waterlogged tissue falls apart.
Becomes throat-mulch.

And when he says you look sad, and asks why,
you feel sadder, fumbling
for the frayed thread, while

feeling a wet whip flailing you,
whittling you to the imperfect figure
you have made of yourself.

Today for #LiftToTheSky we should give a boost to our lovely wee indie presses who are often run by solo enthusiasts wanting to give a voice to lesser known poets. They put in a lot of hard graft to curate anthologies, run social media accounts and workshops and support poets in untold ways. 1/2

Fake cobwebs like these may look spooky – but what's really scary about them is that they can trap & injure wildlife, including birds, insects & small mammals. And fake webs aren't recyclable – so will end up in landfill for many years.
