These secondaries (B2O3, AlBO3, Al18B4O33) tend to form in oxygen rich environments...but don't appear to form in an oxygen deprived environment. So as long as I use Nitrogen or Argon to fill the vessel, I can use a boron nitride crucible, some kaowool, the guts of a microwave, and a pressure vessel

Boron has the potential to form secondary compounds that will physically jab into and break the crystal as it's slowly cooling, which is a fkn no-go.

We're talking one molecule per sq yard (hyperbolic). One tiny little O2 molecule bouncing around in the pot. That's a pain in the ass. Uses a lot of energy too. It'd be better if I didn't have to worry about it... i.e. Pull down a normal vacuum and be sure nothing can contaminate the crystal

Anywho, I make vacuum chamber with microwave guts inside, microwave heats crucible full of Al2O3 + dopants = lab made sapphire boules made in the US without bullshit tariffs. Gemcutters Unite ✊

Sounds simple, but really not fkn simple. The vacuum necessary to prevent contamination is stupid

I don't know of a suitable replacement refractory material that can be heated by microwave but will not contaminate a growing crystal. For some reason my brain keeps circling around boron nitride. I don't think anything coming off it would interfere with the Al3+ lattice, but I'm also not an expert
