So obsessed with his post 90s work that it never occurred to me that Kurosawa wrote and directed Sweet Home!
It’s funny because as insane as Blackmore was that night, David Coverdale absolutely stole the show — an iconic performance for a 23 yr old lad from Yorkshire

Deep Purple. “Mistreated.” 1974. It’s not only one of the greatest gigs in music history — but you have to appreciate that David Coverdale is only 23 here. A young lad from a tiny seaside resort in Yorkshire England delivering THIS vocal performance to a crowd of 400,000 in California & national TV.
That’s the ‘the thing’ about They Live — the source novel is from the 60s during civil rights era, and Carpenter’s screenplay adaptation sets it against the 80s Reagan “rich get richer” backdrop — and somehow the message from the 60s - 80s is still relevant today because PEOPLE ARE SO FUCKING DUMB.
If there was ever a film director that was so vastly misunderstood or generally disliked by ‘film critics’, while adored by his die-hard cult fanbase, it would be John Carpenter.
THEY LIVE. 1988. Dir: John Carpenter. Beyond the plot twist of aliens secretly living among us as mind-controlling oligarchs, the irony of those aliens needing their own labor class of alien cops & soldiers pitted against equally expendable human livestock is about as 2025 as it gets. EAT THE RICH!
Ah but they didn’t have the mighty Al Pitrelli!!
Imagine having writers block, putting the guitar down for 2 weeks and coming back with the RIFF OF ALL RIFFS
😂 neither are THAT bad
Haha! It begs the question — of all the things one loves, I wonder how much was discovered by oneself or through recommendations by others. I have no idea how to determine it but I feel like it’s a 50/50 split for me. ☯️
I don’t love it, but I think I’ve been overly harsh on it. Said differently, it’s better than Super Collider.
Black Sabbath played the California Jam in 1974 to 250,000 people — though reports suggest 400K w/gatecrashers — but either way, it was, and still is, their largest ever audience. Look at all the color!! Rainbows, flowers, and Children of the Grave. Watch ‘til the end for Ozzy’s interview 🌈
This is actually a stroke of genius — how a global sport can bring together a global city.
When that “Hangar 18” riff/tempo changes and Marty goes full blown middle eastern 𓂀

#Metalsky #Megadeth
I know — it’s a historic failure by music directors and camera operators. At least you get to see him play on his tutorials, however. 😬

60 seconds w/ Marty Friedman 🙂‍↔️
Megadeth. Hangar 18 pt 2 - Electric Boogaloo

“Welcome to an empty fortress, a mighty wreck that once was proud
Ate alive by oxidation, abandoned by a crew of cowards
Navigation systems failed computers crashed and they all fall down

And military intelligence is
STILL 2 WORDS THAT CAN’T MAKE SENSE”
Beautiful — especially when it pivots halfway through
How old were you when you got into ToN? That feels like ‘adult metal’ to me 😂
I’ve talked about it 100 times on this app — highest recommendation 🥇
Red people who live in blue states clearly benefit, but blues living in red states must surely be in the pits of hell
Ringu hit western shores first — but Ju On was also massive. And now there’s dozens of Ringu and Ju On sequels & prequels, they really cashed in.

P.S. Kurosawa’s Cure came out before them both but didn’t gain traction until later, presumably after his other film, Pulse, took off. Both mandatory.
I would watch this back to back with The Man with Two Brains 😀
Ringu. 1998. Dir: Hideo Nakata. The film that put modern J-Horror on the map w/ its eerie pacing & sense of dread, steeped in local folklore of ghostly, vengeful spirits. Even the cursed video footage itself looked jarring — simply, it was unlike anything Hollywood. Top shelf.

#shocktober #horror 🇯🇵
Ring / Ringu movie poster
Yeah! I think Cabin and Tucker would make a good double bill 🍿 🍿
