"The Sicilian pizza is 'upside-down.' Is that OK?"

"What do you mean?"

"First the cheese, and then the sauce on top of that."

"Sure."

If I'd heard solo John first it would be hard for me to believe that he'd produced all that Beatle stuff. The solo stuff is mostly pretty mediocre. And I'm a huge Beatles fan, and think John is one of the very greatest rock singers.

I don't give John much or any credit for that. To me, it was Yoko and their producer. I think the producers get a ton of credit for John's solo work. I don't think he could be bothered with those details.

I love Beatle John but am much less generous about his later stuff. The way I see it, he mostly retreated into the rock and roll of his youth and rarely ventured very far from that. Compare McCartney, who was all over the place (in a good way) in the '70s.

The whole thing is crazy. I can't imagine anyone actually choosing to go through all that. I have four tone controls on my amp (with high mid and low mid) and I can't see having any more than that unless you're recording, in which you use the EQ on the board.

You mean to say you don't know how much 510 Hz you like?

A lot of amps have graphic equalizers (with maybe ten bands), which I think is also crazy, though seeing the curve helps a bit. These numbers are meaningless.

Someone generously lent me this bass amp at a gig last night, and I won't look a gift horse in the mouth, but I don't get how people use amps this complicated. When you're playing live you've got a minute to get your sound right, and with an amp like this it takes an hour. P.S.: I've seen worse.

Serious question: Does anyone have a good explanation for all this, beyond "They want to kill everyone"?

Per CDC source: At internal leadership meeting this afternoon, it was shared that 1,257 people were RIF'd at CDC. Number may not be final. Apparently, chief of staff was unaware that RIFs were going to occur so not clear who is making decisions. (Short 🧵)

...The Ohara project is a very '70s thing (1974, I think), obviously inspired by the popularity of chain letters, a big thing at the time.

...Some of the collages were obvious inspiration for the xerox-art movement that blossomed in the '80s. Surprised to see that this stuff was from the early '60s.

Great stuff at the Whitney right now: "Sixties Surreal," including some incredible paintings, sculptures, and ahead-of-their time collages from quite a few artists I'd never heard of, and CONTACTS by Ken Ohara, where he sent a camera to random people around the US and had them shoot rolls of film.

One of the current exhibits at Poster House is US National Parks posters, many of them (like this one) by the brilliant artist/illustrator Dorothy Waugh. Poster House remains one of the best-kept secrets in NYC.

That place may have been out of business for twenty years. I can't remember.

We're close to completing our list for September. Look for it on our site next week. If you need a refresher, or, you know, lean toward masochism, here are all 416 atrocities committed by the Trump administration since the reality TV star/steak salesman/convicted felon took office.

...Transitioning from Scene Five to Scene Six: What human is capable of such marvels?

People have been running schools, writing stories, writing plays, and composing music for millennia, and suddenly no can imagine how those things are possible without AI.

David Simon, creator of ‘The Wire’, being interviewed by Ari Shapiro (NPR)
SHAPIRO: OK, so you've spent your career creating television without Al, and I could imagine today you thinking, boy, I wish I had had that tool to solve those thorny problems...
SIMON: What?
SHAPIRO: ...Or saying...
SIMON: You imagine that?
SHAPIRO: ...Boy, if that had existed, it would have screwed me over.
SIMON: I don't think Al can remotely challenge what writers do at a fundamentally creative level.
SHAPIRO: But if you're trying to transition from scene five to scene six, and you're stuck with that transition, you could imagine plugging that portion of the script into an Al and say, give me 10 ideas for how to transition this.
SIMON: I'd rather put a gun in my mouth.
