I agree on a gut level, and also think it’s healthy for YIMBYs to hash out these arguments publicly. No need to uphold a fake consensus on a difficult issue.

Also @jessezwick.bsky.social did I hear correctly that Santa Monica used to be 25% black and 25% latino? That’s a higher proportion than Oakland today.

Heartbreaking: Neo-soul legends Angie Stone and D’Angelo both passed away in 2025, just 7 months apart. Stone died in March at 63. D’Angelo died today at 51. They shared a son together. An entire generation’s soundtrack, gone. Rest in power to both 🕊️💔

Good episode. I would add that we’re similarly bad at cost-benefit analysis for environmental requirements, stormwater management requirements, etc. A dense city full of stucco boxes is more sustainable than sprawling LEED Platinum single family homes.

I remember 3 or 4 years ago the rents were about the same in nominal terms, which translated to about 70% of AMI at the time.

Every so often I look up the rents for the Nook on Valdez, a micro-unit project in downtown Oakland built about 10 years ago. They are currently renting units affordable to people at 45% of AMI. This is a market-rate project that pays property taxes.
