Paramjit Singh is going blind while in ICE detention in Kenton County Jail, KY. He’s been a green card holder since 1994.

DHS wants to deport him for a forgery conviction — but they’ve produced no record that one exists.

A 13-year-old boy was arrested by Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents in Everett after an interaction with members of the Everett Police Department and sent to a juvenile detention facility in Virginia, according to his mother and immigration lawyer Andrew Lattarulo.

The boy’s mother, Josiele Berto, was called to pick her son up from the Everett Police Department on Thursday, the day he was arrested. After waiting for about an hour and a half, she was told her son was taken by ICE, Berto told the Globe in a phone interview.

“My world collapsed,” Berto said in Portuguese.

From the police department, the boy was taken to ICE’s holding facility in Burlington on Thursday evening, where he spent a night before being transferred by car to the Northwestern Regional Juvenile Detention Center in Winchester, Va., on Friday morning, his mother said. The juvenile facility is more than 500 miles away from Everett.

The boy is a 7th-grader at Albert N. Parlin School in Everett, his mother said. The teen and his family, who are Brazilian nationals, have a pending asylum case and are authorized to work legally in the United States, Lattarulo said.

I wrote about how dementia is helping some people preserve rare Judeo-Iranian languages. It's a story of intergenerational partnerships and how family bonds can get stronger even in the face of an awful disease. Check it out! @forward.com @jewishlanguageproj.bsky.social forward.com/culture/7739...
Could dementia be the key to saving endangered Jewish languages?
Sometimes when people's short-term memories begin to falter, they recall the first languages that they learned.

Shelters that house unaccompanied minors are bracing for "Freaky Friday," the start of an ICE operation that will first issue letters to children, seeking to pressure them to return to the countries they've fled in exchange for a cash payment. If they decline, their parents will be targeted by ICE.

Prison telecom companies and more than a dozen red-state attorneys have challenged imposing limits on the cost of phone calls from prison, arguing that they would deprive lockups of necessary funding.

For the new ep of KyCIR's Digging In series, I brought @divyakrthk.bsky.social back on the @lpm.org airwaves to talk about an immigration case w/ KY & IN ties. U.S. authorities say an Indiana man was convicted once for forgery & should be deported. But Divya's reporting found a lack of evidence.
