To commemorate Animal Kingdom’s Birthday, I’m going to repost my very silly Twitter thread reading the also very silly (& somehow officially licensed ???) Countdown to Extinction book — all 42 pages of it.

🚨 Featuring Grant Seeker lore! 🚨

Hey everyone, the 2nd thing I am proud to show is still very much a work in progress, but we got a test print made of the book I’ve been working on for the past year with Sander de Lange: Galactic Backpacking!
I went on my first Disney cruise this summer on the Dream, in large part because of the Art Deco design. I’m interested in some of the spaces on a few Wish-class ships (Treasure mainly), but those neither-here-nor-there designs leave me so cold.

My Disney Cruise Experience

—— THE GOOD ——

1. The romantic art deco design of the Disney Dream feeds my very soul.

Most ships have weird, abstract concepts: “you’re in a city!” “you’re in space!”. Here you instinctively know the story being told through lacquered teak and rich fabrics.
One of my favorite memories of my mom is how we would repeat “Brilliant!” anytime someone on tv said it, because of these ads.

I still do it even today!
Brewmasters
Guinness
2005-2007

This Moo Studios-produced series of comic American ads for Guinness followed two old-fashioned Irishmen who invented just about anything, not limited to bottles, telephones, bread slicers and bear traps, remarking on their every little accomplishment with "Brilliant!"
Sounds like a wonderful day (and fantastic hair too!) — Happy Birthday, friend!!
Had a dream that all of Distwitter pooled their resources to buy and design a theme park. In Japan.

It didn’t go well.

@enchantedcaballero.bsky.social I saw Panchito and José and just assumed you had posted this
It brings me such joy to see Huell celebrated. He got his start on our local NBC affiliate in Nashville and I remember him making appearances there well into the ‘90s.

My child self saw the La Brea tar pits on California’s Gold once & thought hey, if Huell is there, it must be a short drive away!
It’s apparently Florida week on Wheel of Fortune and I can’t stop laughing at how they slipped Kissimmee in there

Great story from the making of THE ROCKETEER (1991). After saving a victim, The Rocketeer was to land in wet cement in front of the Chinese Theater (to be shot at Disney-MGM Studios) & take off again leaving blast marks. The scene got cut but the blast marks & the opening date of the movie made it.
It appears in my feed, but it’s only the first post and the last that show up (which is usually the summary “that’s it for the epic costumes, next we move to legendary” ones).

I’m not a fan of excessive self-reposts, but I think it’s completely fine to repost some you found esp noteworthy.
Special shout-out to when you could still buy toy pistols at Magic Kingdom and wear a real holster for Mickey’s Not-So Scary
Repost with your favorite Halloween costume.

My 2020 hair meant I could do a “wolfman drinking a piña colada at Trader Vic’s” costume
I know this is a ton of work, but I *thoroughly* enjoy these threads.
In the throes of 2020, I almost wrote Lynch a letter asking what theme park experience he would make. Would love to see how some Disney project manager would approach that.

If there is one thing Disney is doing right it’s that they are keeping the WHAT ABOUT BOB? (1991) hand puppets preserved in their archives.
This coming on the heels of this week’s bizarre chicken tender media blitz doesn’t bode well.
