After building these bookshelves nearly a year ago I promised I would make decorative column toppers for them. I finally got around to designing them in blender and getting them printed and painted. #3DPrinting

Did you know that if you buy my book on Amazon, Jeff Bezos makes 5 times as much as I do on each copy sold? Sharing some behind-the-scenes book math on why buying directly from presses is best for EVERYONE (except Bezos) in my newsletter today! aubreyhirsch.substack.com/p/book-math

He modeled the logic of induction; traced the contours of the embodied mind; hung out with Einstein, Wheeler, and Bohr; gave away millions for art and conservation; fought for civil and gay rights; and lived as a janitor. My new story in @nautil.us

A deep blue mottled annulus surrounds a black hole, or the moon's disk during a total solar eclipse. On closer gaze, silver ant-like shapes follow each other endlessly around a torus. The torus is tiled with a golden hexagonal grid. Each ant is isolated in its own cell.

#ObjectsOfTheDay: I super want a set of all-brass drawing tools like this. Love it.
A set of exquisite brass triangle, rulers, half curves, angle measures….

Thank you to my friends for the encouraging words this past week 💙

My latest painting was inspired by the coast, water, movement, anemone, seaweed, connections and the cosmos

The series comprises still images of them in different colors, seen from different viewpoints.

A gallery of six mathematical posters:
A sphere resembling an underwater life form with a glowing nucleus;
A purple and green conformal hexagon tiling of a torus, seen from inside;
A white wireframe torus casting a shadow on a virtual calm tropical sea;
A dramatic side-lit red and black form resembling a melted heart;
A blue mollusk shell with a gold coordinate grid looming in a twilit sky;
A field of sky-blue foreground-background arrows masking underlying reality.

Sixteen images of a cone rotating about an axis through the vertex and perpendicular to its own axis, cut by a horizontal plane above the vertex, and seen obliquely. Each cone is warmly-colored like molten metal, grading from bright gold to brick red along the cone axis. The images are arranged around a circle like numbers on a clock face, with the image's position equal to the cone's angle of rotation. The cones float against a twilit sky grading from medium blue at the bottom to dark blue, and together they comprise a glowing bracelet-like ring.

Two puzzles I'm building:
🔴 12 pieces slide into a cube with coordinated motions in 2D abstract space.
🔵 30 pieces form a dodecahedron with 4D motions.

Thanks to my friend James Horton, I have just discovered the work of Danish painter of Peder Mørk Mønsted (1859-1941) and HOW CAN A PERSON NEARLY A HUNDRED YEARS AGO PAINT SOMETHING THAT LOOKS LIKE IT'S A PHOTO ON AN IPHONE WHAT IS THIS ABSOLUTE SORCERY.
Photo....no, wait, a PAINTING, by Peder Mørk Mønsted, of the snow-laden banks of a river that looks absolutely photo-real. Another painting by Peder Mørk Mønsted that looks utterly photo-realistic of a tree-lined river with utterly convincing shades of green-tinted darkness and perfect reflections in the river below.

Beautiful!

Ivan Shishkin's work lands similarly for me; off to peruse Mønsted.... en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ivan_Sh...
