If I'm a Republican in '28 I let Vance take all the punches first.
tomscherschel.bsky.social
What do you make of their already being multiple Dems positioning themselves to run in ‘28 but no similar activity on the GOP side? Is that normal as these things go, or is it a sign?

Mamdani got, and will get, a not-insignificant amount of votes on Staten Island. People forget that.
cmonagan.bsky.social
Means different things in Manhattan and Staten Island, too.
dicknixon.bsky.social
As with anything else it all depends on how you pose the question. If you ask people "Are you for socialism?," they'll say no. If you ask them if the government should invest in jobs to help ensure the general beautification, safety, and improvement of the city, state, etc., they will say yes.
dicknixon.bsky.social
This seems accurate until you remember that Mamdani's identification as a socialist makes little sense historically. In philosophy he is more of a New Dealer, something that until recently most people would recognize. The New Deal meant different things in New York and Montana. That's all it is.

What we do know is Social Democrats appeal in big coastal cities, moderate Democrats in the suburbs and Independents in rural areas.

We can’t push one message without risking 2/3 of the electorate.

Pritzker is losing weight.

I wonder if he’ll try to slim down. Candidate usually do.

Mike Shildt says that in part he retired from baseball because he got death threats from gamblers. It wasn't the only reason, he wanted out, but it didn't help matters.

Reid’s man Adam Jentleson has set up a new think tank that basically sells Blue Dog-ism as a new idea. To be a Blue Dog was once the future. So was the Wishbone offense.
wilforth42.bsky.social
Sir, what exactly is the “Jentleson Thing”?
dicknixon.bsky.social
I’ve said it over and over: he looks and talks like a guy from Illinois, like a union reprsentative.
johncluverius.bsky.social
like it or not it's how you carry it. Pritzker looks, moves, and talks like he's part of Local 400, not the Forbes 400.
dicknixon.bsky.social
Pritzker has touched on it but in so many words his line will be, "Yeah, I'm rich. But my money's safe. I don't run a business. I have more than I need. I'm not beholden to anybody. This puts me in a position to fight for you. I want more money in your pocket and for it to be as safe as mine."
markshatraw.bsky.social
Works for some, not others. Pritzker's a billionaire; what does he mean "we"
dicknixon.bsky.social
In private the people who run campaigns will tell you they admire Sanders, they admire Ocasio-Cortez. The way they talk lands right now. But the party apparatus holds the others back.
dicknixon.bsky.social
Ideally any party is a big tent. But Bob Casey Sr. was an anti-abortion Democrat in conditions that allowed that to exist. On most things now you're in or out. Jentleson is selling his thing as new when he's really promising to help Democrats do the same dance they're already doing.
dicknixon.bsky.social
When one side grabs kids off the street and thinks the courts are no barrier, the political thing is to go like hell for equal rights and equal protection and money in everyone's pocket. You debate the terms of art later.
dicknixon.bsky.social
The fault of the Jentleson thing is it offers a solution to something that doesn't exist. If Mitt Romney were in office with the sons waiting in the wings, then you have a conversation on how to take that territory back. But the lines today are completely different.

I think every Democratic candidate in 2028 is going to need a version of Gov. Walz's "One person's socialism is another person's neighborliness," sir
dicknixon.bsky.social
It's true that in New York many people come from places where socialism is attractive. You can sell that if you know who you're talking to. But when you tell people there should be a grocery store a mile away, and you should be able to afford it? They don't think of socialism.
pittbandphoto.bsky.social
You are exactly right that Mamdani's is a strictly NYC phenomena. In just about anywhere else, being an admitted Socialist is a kiss of death, even though most people don't really understand the ideology.
dicknixon.bsky.social
Nationally it becomes a matter of tone. "You and I live here. We know what the problems are. Join me, we can do something about it. Them? They're from somewhere else. They must be, to deny what everybody knows. Let's outnumber them."
dicknixon.bsky.social
You shouldn't see one more dumb ad with with somebody walking Main Street in their old fighter jacket. That's over. You have to tell a better story than that.
dicknixon.bsky.social
Mamdani is going to win. The question will now be, "Can you reproduce this?" It's doubtful. He's talented. But it's possible, first of all, if you remember all politics is local, and the more local you get - the more people recognize you - the more things like age and parties cease to matter.

Newsom acting like Trump Lite = bad theatre, seen it before, lacks Trump's perverse charm, speaks to a closed loop

Portland frogs posting up on ICE goons = good theatre, never seen it before, highlights a ridiculous thing by juxtaposing another, kids love it, shareable among all kinds of adult

A lot of people in airports don't know the problem is political. They hate the airlines. They'll get it first. Tell them it's political, you create more problems for yourself.
dicknixon.bsky.social
Once again, that damn dumb Noem video and everything like it ignores a basic law of politics: people think the President of the United States is a magician and can do whatever he wants when he wants. If he says Democrats caused the shutdown, well by God do something about it.
dicknixon.bsky.social
What Mamdani is saying in regards to law enforcement is exactly what I recommended five years ago.
plinytheelder-t.bsky.social
Mamdani has found the antidote to boneheaded "defund the police" bs & a clear way to partner w. law enforcement.

I have been accused of everything up to bigamy, forgery, and murder. That is one type of politics. Another is simply showing people things your opponent did.

The Katie Porter viral videos do show someone with deficient interpersonal skills at best. But let's be honest about why the pile-on is happening: the political establishment in California wants to tempt Alex Padilla into the race by smearing his top opponent.

Catcher-to-catcher, Uecker liked Contreras an awful lot.
That was Contreras the whole way. Frelick had no idea what was even happening. That was a catch ball throw ball move. Contreras knew the whole way. Didn’t even attempt a tag
