The thing about taxes is they can invest in our society and shared future, the roads we drive, food we eat, schools and parks and programs and health and safety that serve us all. Or, they can subsidize enormous wealthy corporations and rich people’s tax shelters and lifestyles.

There’s a lot to worry about, a lot to feel bad about. But let’s not forget that the media has always been shaped to platform the loudest, most extreme—and now it’s got algorithms and bot farms. There are still a lot of good people (I remind myself). Look for them everywhere, where you least expect.

I don't get the determination to make Columbus relevant to US history. He never set foot on US soil. He "discovered" a place where millions of people lived and vikings and Irish fishermen knew about.
