The dead don't have sovereignty over the living. Two generations ago, hating the French was considered a core part of the German identity. Generational changes in how a people see and define themselves are possible. But I do agree it will be difficult with the Russians.

And what is more, “our grandparents fought the war” is a slogan widely used in russia to convince russians they should also go to war and make their grandparents proud

Retired American general Jack Keane who served as Vice Chief of Staff of the United States Army stated that if Tomahawks are transferred to Ukraine, their first target would be the drone production center in Yelabuga, Russia, allegedly staffed by 20,000 North Korean workers.

It's incredible watching the Russians get stuck in the very mud that stopped those who invaded Russia in the past. One would expect them to know better. But no, apparently.

Daily reminder that Putin have already had to run away from literally few hundred guys storming Moscow and they were blowing up roads in panic.

That's unfortunately the thing we have no influence over. It will be up to Tuvans, Chechens, Bashkirs, Tatars, Chuvashs, Buryats, Yakuts, Mokshas, and others to cast aside the Russian yoke, not just physically, but also over their minds.

But that's not how it works in oppressive empires. That's why russia still an empire and still exists. It doesn't matter the numbers if all those also think they are russian because they already have no language, no culture, and so on.

10 years from now, there will be a huge young population in the ethnic minority regions of Russia. Larger than the young population among ethnic Russians. And it will be a fatherless generation. Because their fathers were sent to die by the Russians. There is a lot of potential for disruption there.
derparrot.bsky.social
Siberian ethnic groups like the Tuvans have a birth rate of 2.3. The Chechen birth rate is 2.8. The ethnic Russian birth rate is 1.2. It's correct that the Russian population is declining, the big overlooked picture, is that Russian demographic dominance over its past Imperial conquests is fading.
derparrot.bsky.social
You know, long term, it will not matter that Russia sent so many ethnic minorities to die in this war. The ethnic minorities have higher birthrates and higher life expectancy, than ethnic Russians.

It's gonna be hard to get more self-determination when all the fighting age men have left for Ukraine.

I really don't like Mark Rutte. Ben Wallace would have been a far better NATO general secretary. It's stupid that the only reason he didn't get the job was that a post-Brexit Europe didn't want a British NATO general secretary.

Glad I am not the only one who sees parallels between 1848 and 2011.

He responded to the Arab Spring the same way Nicholas I responded to the revolutions of 1848, he's really not in the Soviet Model.

I would not be surprised if in the aftermath of a Russian defeat, the ethnic minorities begin to yearn even more for self-determination and the Russian state institutes repressive state measures to crack down on them. Bringing back the Soviet ID system would be part of that.
derparrot.bsky.social
I find it amusing when people say Putin is bringing back "only the bad parts" of the Soviet Union....

What the fuck are the good parts?
derparrot.bsky.social
Oh wow. In case you don't know, Soviet birth certificates and identity papers had to list your ethnicity in a "nationality" category. "Kazakh" "Turkman" "Jew" "Armenian" etcetera. In Soviet times, it was used to discriminate against ethnicities by Soviet institutions requiring ID and having quotas.

“Russia wants to return to the Soviet-era birth certificate format.”

Giving arms to Russia in this war was one of the biggest mistakes the Iranian regime made. It had some good will in Europe for negotiations. Now, not only is most of that good will gone, but it has dedicated enemies. Those closest to Ukraine will want Iran to be punished, and work toward that goal.
