He's a huge misanthrope and the main character is not someone you're supposed to sympathize with but rather be a stand in for a lot of people who he really thinks are weak and shallow.

It's a bit more complex in that he's satirizing the genre of the Last Sane Conservative novel, the "in a world gone mad with Libs, only one Man has the traditional values to stand up for what is Right" types.
