There where times that weren't that nice. Food Stamps allowed me to get back on my feet. From 1979 to 2012 I worked, payed taxes, donated to charities and was a citizen.

Most people who receive SNAP are on for a short time and those that aren't are usually disabled.

Food is not a luxury.

The “what should poor people be allowed to eat” debate is infuriating.

The answer is simple.

They should be allowed to eat anything.

It’s no one’s business.

Ideally we would agree that food is a basic human right & it would be plentiful for all.

Until then, stop judging. Fed is best.

Newsom: I cannot wait for all the punditry. Historic victories all across the United States of America. Proposition 50 winning by double digits. A new governor of New Jersey, a new governor in Virginia.

I’ll end as I began: thank you for giving a damn.

it's time for journos to start asking Johnson meta questions

"Speaker, on 5 occasions last week you said 'I haven't seen it' when asked about news events w/big implications for public policy. Do you ever read the news, and do you agree it's problematic for the Speaker to be so woefully uninformed?"
Society institutionalized their poverty. There was no generational wealth because there was only poverty to inherit. Almost no education available, very little chance for advancement and yes of course, continued racism.

Education, opportunity and the safety net that makes their pursuit possible.
Remember the Black Codes were mostly racist restrictions on rights of free citizens. They only applied to Blacks so only Blacks suffered the loss of their rights, their freedom and the wages they should have earned.

The owners of these businesses would pay the state for every prisoner laborer.

It is believed that more than 800,000 Blacks were part of the system of peonage, or re-enslavement through the prison system. Peonage didn’t end until after World War II began, around 1940.

Once arrested, these men, women and children would be leased to plantations where they would harvest cotton, tobacco, sugar cane. Or they would be leased to work at coal mines, or railroad companies.
This made the business of arresting Blacks very lucrative, which is why hundreds of White men were hired as by these states as police officers. Their primary responsibility was to search out and arrest Blacks who were in violation of Black Codes.

It's pretty clear we owe reparations because we institutionized poverty.

In 1866, one year after the 13 Amendment was ratified (ended slavery), Alabama, Texas, Louisiana, Arkansas, Georgia, Mississippi, Florida, Tennessee, and South Carolina began to lease out convicts for labor (peonage).

The Queen's Gambit was a super popular Netflix biopic that got them sued. The show claimed Gaprindashvili had never faced men. She's been destroying male chess masters for over 50 years.

Yes, I’ve been indicted. But I don’t want people to lose sight of what got us here.

Thank you for having me, @chrislhayes.bsky.social on @allinwithchris.bsky.social to discuss why these atrocities need to end and why there needs to be real accountability.
