In fact, I'll bet that's the goal because the incentives to destroy it outweigh the costs to do so by currying favor with Trump.

I don't think Bezos cares... At all. He bought it for $250m in 2013 and even if it tanks to zero that's literally 0.001% of his net worth ($220b).

That's like the avg US household (net worth of $192k) losing $192.

I spent more than that this weekend on entertainment for my family.

Selfishly I was thinking Memphis but New Orleans is great.

I'm not immune to the understanding that we have to try to protect people who these states do not protect but also those same people work in these states or are students here and are disadvantaged because of these decisions, too.

I don't know what the solution is here and I'm not offering one - I just want to highlight some of the issues that we're wrestling with in southern spaces.

And one day some policymakers are gonna take note this money isn't spent in their states..... That won't be great.

We were able to ignore that for a bit but pressure is being placed on admins.

Which means anyone who doesn't have extra funds won't be going to said conferences - and we all know how important conferences are for networking and opportunities.

It disadvantages faculty, staff, and students in southern locations.

Also, FYI some of our institutions are starting to look at themes because state laws suggest they won't pay for conferences that align with certain thematic features.

Not having academic conferences in southern states is a disservice to students in southern states because not everyone has the funding to always fly out to and stay in places like DC (super costly), Denver, Portland, and NYC (Chicago too but I'm biased there).
