To me, the extra shade of meaning is that the first choice wasn't available or possible. It's a little stronger than just a preference. It says you would use the alternative because the other choice wasn't an option.

Part of the game has always been pitchers and batters learning what a given ump will call. So that's out the window when we go with an automated system. Feels like fans are ready to lose that to get more consistent calls, though.
