Anyway, this is your regular reminder that my Signal is available in my bio, and that if you have something you want publicly known I'm happy to chat with you about it and come up with a plan.

Not so that I can break it -- breaking news isn't my profession anymore! -- but so it can get out there.

Didn’t we used to have a stronger Halloween firewall against this madness

This is a real “or barbarism” situation.

Value the work you wish to reward. With dollars and clicks and attention and time. Or suffer the consequences of the world you’ve built.

A bunch of folks I know have subscriptions to access and support Nathan Brown’s Indycar reporting alone (yes it is that good)

I know this is not even a little bit replicable, but the Yale Daily News is separately endowed from the university, and sometimes I marvel at how forward-looking the people must have been who pushed for that to get instituted.

GIRL (gn) YES EXACTLY ME TOO

which is why I failed to even think about how that post could be misinterpreted

In retrospect the text of this post, especially when QTed, could give the wrong impression

One of the most important pieces of reporting this year imho www.wsj.com/world/americ...

Indiana University fires IDS
adviser amid push to control
student newspaper's content The director of student media at Indiana University was fired amidst a dispute between university leadership and editors at the Indiana Daily Student over what content gets printed in the student newspaper.

As director of student media, Jim Rodenbush did not directly oversee or have any say over the content published in the IDS, per a charter between the IDS and the university. But he told IndyStar his firing follows a series of meetings with IU Media School leadership in which it grew increasingly apparent they were expecting him to officially prohibit students from publishing news.

I didn’t either, but I enjoyed this one a bunch more (and am Part of the Problem re your hold since I held onto it for the full 3 weeks so I could read it again more slowly at the end of the loan)

Very ignorant question: does OpenAI have a robust UX team? Are they getting user feedback and suggestions in a systematic way? Or are they simply assuming that what tech people (think that consumers) want is what all consumers want?

I really wonder how this episode plays to people who are passively listening to it as opposed to treating it as Appointment Television

I mean, among high-info anti-Trump folks, for SURE for sure. We’re all rooting for your clergy.

It does wear down resistance, though. Hard to keep showing up day in day out if no one knows to tell you you’re doing a good job.

It hasn’t been a problem re Guard but re feds, IDK. ICE has made a couple of grabs in Petworth in recent weeks in view of schoolchildren.
daralind.bsky.social
I will say that as limited as state capacity is, the attention economy may be even more limited. I’ve recently realized most people don’t know feds and Guard are still surged in DC, because attention moved to Chicago and Portland.

USCIS processing data for April-June 2025 show a HUGE drop in U visa applications submitted. (Or maybe in U visa applications that USCIS bothered to open & enter in the system?) Just 68(!) applications were received & entered, compared to 12,000 in Oct-Dec, and 11,000 in Jan-Mar.

PS, corollary to 2) the people who are getting hired in the current OBBBA-funded hiring surge are people who, by definition, look at an ICE doing this stuff and are willing to say “sign me up.”

And we know from experience that hiring surges mean less basic supervision from experienced agents.

+3 cont) the use of profiling, in particular, is both a from-the-top policy choice and possibly _the only heuristic_ that some random ATFer on immigration duty even has.

And of course they’re not making it easy to tell who’s ICE and who’s just externing.
